The Department of English at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, invites applications for a two-year, non-tenure track Visiting Assistant Teaching Professor instructional position that will begin August 10, 2026.We seek an individual with expertise in both the craft of writing poetry and the literary critical study of 20th and 21st century poetry. The successful applicant will be expected to be an effective teacher and will have a 3-3 teaching load, which will be divided between Creative Writing workshops (ranging from Introduction to Creative Writing to intermediate and advanced workshops in poetry) and classes focused on the literary study of poetry (for example, Modern Poetry, 1930-1960, Modern Poetry after 1960, and special topics courses).
Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
An MFA in Creative Writing.
Ability to teach poetry writing workshops.
Ability to teach literary studies courses in modern and contemporary poetry (20th and 21st centuries).
Ability to teach a multi-genre Introduction to Creative Writing workshop.
Preferred Qualifications:
A Ph.D. or ABD in Creative Writing or English; with substantive creative writing training by the time the appointment begins (August 10, 2026).
Previous teaching experience in creative writing workshops.
Previous teaching experience in literary studies courses.
Conditions of Employment:
This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.

A syllabus for an intermediate level Creative Writing workshop in poetry.
A syllabus for a mid-level English course focused on poetry of the 1960s and after.
Applicants are encouraged to reflect on teaching and mentoring practices that advance academic excellence and success of all learners/scholars in Creative Writing and English literary study in any of the aforementioned required documents.
