Job Summary

Provides assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients before and during interfacility transport. Acts independently and proficiently to perform all advanced respiratory therapy general and critical care procedures in accordance with the physician’s order, departmental policy, and Respiratory Care guidelines or protocols.

Essential Functions

  • Performs assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients before and during interfacility transport in ambulance or helicopter. Acts independently and proficiently to perform all advanced respiratory therapy general and critical care procedures in accordance with the physician’s order, departmental policy, and Respiratory Care guidelines or protocols. 

  • Performs airway maintenance including proper use of manual resuscitators, oral and nasal pharyngeal airway insertion, intubations/extubating, perform tracheostomy change. Accurately and completely documents charting.  Initiates, maintains, transports and monitors mechanical ventilators to include conventional and non-conventional modes of ventilation.

  • Analyzes and reports results accurately. Performs blood gas analyzer quality control and maintenance as needed. Initiates umbilical venous catheter insertion. Independently initiates, monitors, and manages all types of airways and associated equipment to include advanced invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation

  • Documents patient care and provides patient and family education as appropriate.

  • Communicates well with all members of the health care team.  Provides a complete and accurate report to Medical Control. Makes recommendations to medical directors during transports as appropriate.

  • Adheres to infection control and quality initiatives.  Performs appropriate cleaning/disinfection and sterilization of equipment between patients as indicated by equipment type and isolation status.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education - Bachelor’s degree- Respiratory Therapy or other related field and a graduate of a school for Respiratory Therapy approved by the American Medical Association or a successor accrediting authority.

  • Experience - Three (3) years of experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist, with PICU NICU experience.

In Lieu Of

  • In Lieu of the education and experience requirements noted above, an associate degree and 5 years relevant experience

Required Certifications, Registrations, Licenses

  • RRT from NBRC (credentials must be maintained)

  • South Carolina Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)

  • BLS

  • Certification required may include any or all of the following depending on the unit: ACLS, NRP, PALS.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge in multiple Ventilators, Jet ventilator, Nitric delivery system

  • Ability to obtain blood gases from all sites.
