Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice.  These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

Position Overview

The Department of Near Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures (NESA) at The Ohio State University invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position in Arabic Philology and Epigraphy. We seek candidates whose research focuses on Arabic Philology and related aspects and who have the ability to teach undergraduate General Education courses on Arabic language and culture as well as graduate-level courses in philology, epigraphy, and linguistics. Native or near-native fluency in both English and Arabic is required.

Performance Objectives

  • Teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Conducts research focusing on Arabic linguistics, philology, and epigraphy
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a student body with many different backgrounds at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Actively contributes to cross-disciplinary research
  • Contributes to the department in service and committee work as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

  • PhD in Arabic linguistics or related field as of August 15, 2026
  • Ability to provide training in research methods in Arabic linguistics and related fields to undergraduate and graduate students
  • Native or near-native fluency in both English and Arabic

Desired:

  • College level teaching experience
  • Ability to contribute to the university-level AI Fluency Initiative and the proposed Arts & Humanities AI Institute
  • Ability to foster synergy with other programs within NESA and across campus
