HVAC Service Technician

Columbus, OH

Comfort Systems USA Ohio, a leading provider of commercial HVAC, mechanical, service, building automation, security, and integrated building solutions, is seeking an experienced HVAC Service Technician to support our commercial Service operations in the Columbus market.

This role is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and startup of commercial HVAC systems and equipment, including large-tonnage equipment, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, rooftop units, packaged systems, water-source heat pumps, air handling systems, heating equipment, and associated controls. The HVAC Service Technician works independently in the field to diagnose equipment issues, complete repairs and preventative maintenance, and help ensure customer systems operate safely, reliably, and efficiently.

This position is ideal for an experienced commercial HVAC technician who is technically skilled, dependable, customer-focused, and comfortable troubleshooting complex equipment in the field. The right person takes ownership of their work, communicates effectively with customers and the Service team, and maintains a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

HVAC Service, Maintenance & Repair

  • Perform preventative maintenance, diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, and equipment replacements on commercial HVAC systems in accordance with manufacturer requirements, company standards, and applicable codes.
  • Service and repair commercial HVAC equipment, including rooftop units, air handling systems, DX equipment, packaged systems, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, water-source heat pumps, and associated controls.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, refrigerant, airflow, and control-related issues, including compressor failures, gas-fired and electric heating systems, thermostats, sensors, building automation systems (BAS), and pneumatic and electronic controls.
  • Inspect and service equipment to identify operating issues, wear, and potential failures; complete preventative maintenance activities such as cleaning coils, inspecting and replacing belts and filters, and handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA regulations and industry best practices.

System Startup, Diagnostics & Troubleshooting

  • Provide startup and operational support for newly installed commercial HVAC equipment, including starting systems, monitoring operation, and verifying proper system performance.
  • Utilize gauges, meters, testing instruments, and other diagnostic equipment to identify equipment issues and verify system operation.
  • Adjust valves, controls, pumps, and other components as needed to maintain appropriate flow, pressure, temperature, and operating conditions.
  • Perform site evaluations and troubleshoot complex system issues, escalating concerns when additional technical support is needed; verify completed work and confirm equipment is operating safely and properly before leaving the customer site.

Customer Service & Service Coordination

  • Communicate professionally with customers regarding equipment conditions, service performed, recommended repairs, and system operation, providing appropriate technical information or basic equipment training when needed.
  • Identify equipment efficiency, maintenance, repair, replacement, and system improvement opportunities and communicate recommendations through the appropriate internal channels.
  • Maintain regular communication with dispatch regarding service calls, job status, scheduling changes, and support needs while building positive working relationships with customers, Service leadership, and other team members.
  • Prepare for service calls by reviewing available equipment information, building layouts, job requirements, and anticipated material or equipment needs to support efficient completion of assigned work.

Documentation, Safety & Equipment

  • Complete required service documentation accurately and timely, including labor time, materials, parts used, work performed, equipment conditions, and recommended follow-up, while maintaining records necessary for billing and equipment history.
  • Perform all work in accordance with company safety policies and procedures, applicable regulatory requirements, and customer site requirements.
  • Maintain assigned company vehicles, tools, equipment, and materials in a safe, clean, organized, and service-ready condition.
  • Properly use and care for company-provided tools, testing equipment, personal protective equipment, and other resources while maintaining a safe, organized, and professional work area at customer locations.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of HVAC field experience with demonstrated experience servicing commercial HVAC systems and equipment.
  • EPA Universal Technician Certification.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet company driving requirements.
  • Strong mechanical, electrical, and HVAC troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose equipment issues and determine appropriate repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment documentation, wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical information.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate professionally with customers, dispatch, supervisors, and other team members.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work independently, manage service priorities, and complete required documentation accurately and timely.
  • Ability and willingness to work in mechanical rooms, on rooftops, and in indoor and outdoor environments with varying temperatures and weather conditions.

Preferred

  • Associate degree, technical degree, apprenticeship, or equivalent formal training in HVAC or a related field.
  • Experience servicing large-tonnage commercial HVAC equipment, including DX equipment, packaged systems, rooftop units, boilers, water-source heat pumps, and air handling systems.
  • Experience servicing chilled-water systems, chillers, cooling towers, and associated HVAC equipment.
  • Experience troubleshooting gas-fired and electric heating equipment and pneumatic, electronic, or building automation controls.
  • Experience performing commercial HVAC equipment startups and preventative maintenance.
  • Experience working directly with commercial customers in a field service environment.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds and handle heavier equipment or materials with appropriate assistance.
  • Ability to frequently stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb ladders, and work in varying positions while servicing equipment.
  • Ability to safely access and work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, equipment areas, and other commercial customer environments.
  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, diagnostic equipment, and other equipment required for HVAC service work.
  • Ability to travel to customer locations throughout the assigned Columbus service area.
  • Ability to work overtime, after-hours, or participate in on-call service coverage as required by business and customer needs.
