Safety Coordinator

Burns Logistics & Burns Waste |Ā  Reports to: General Manager |Ā  Full-Time

Position Summary

Burns Logistics and Burns Waste are seeking a Safety Coordinator to serve as the cornerstone of safety and compliance across both divisions. This role owns the full safety lifecycle — from building a culture of safe operations on the road and job site, to ensuring our drivers and team members are trained, compliant, and confident from day one. The Safety Coordinator will work across heavy haul logistics and waste operations, adapting safety programs and compliance oversight to the unique demands of each business. Burns is a technology-forward operation: we use AI tools extensively across the business, build proprietary software in-house, and expect our team to embrace technology as a driver of efficiency. If you are passionate about protecting people, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and bring hands-on experience with DOT/FMCSA regulations, we want to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

Safety & Compliance Ownership

  • Serve as the primary authority for all safety policies, procedures, and programs across Burns Logistics and Burns Waste operations
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with DOT, FMCSA, and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations across both divisions
  • Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and ride-alongs to identify and address hazards proactively
  • Administer DOT drug and alcohol testing programs for both divisions, including pre-employment, random, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, and return-to-duty testing
  • Manage the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse — conducting required queries, reporting violations, and maintaining program compliance
  • Oversee load securement standards and pre-trip/post-trip inspection processes, ensuring drivers meet DOT requirements and company protocols on every dispatch
  • Develop, maintain, and regularly review accident prevention plans and emergency response procedures for both divisions; ensure all personnel are trained and prepared to execute
  • Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses; document findings and implement corrective actions
  • Maintain accurate records for driver qualification files, HOS logs, inspection reports, and compliance documentation across both divisions
  • Coordinate with management on regulatory updates and ensure timely policy revisions

Ā

Safety Training

  • Design, schedule, and deliver all safety training programs for drivers and operations staff across Burns Logistics and Burns Waste
  • Conduct DOT-required training including HazMat awareness, hours of service, defensive driving, and load securement
  • Facilitate periodic refresher training and respond to identified performance or safety gaps
  • Track training completion and maintain compliance training records for all personnel

Ā

New Hire Onboarding

  • Own and facilitate the safety and compliance component of the new hire onboarding program across both divisions
  • Ensure all new drivers and operations employees are fully oriented to company safety standards before beginning work
  • Facilitate Burns New Driver Training, ensuring all new drivers complete the full program curriculum before operating independently
  • Serve as a welcoming point of contact for new team members during their onboarding experience

Ā

Reporting & Communication

  • Track, analyze, and present safety performance metrics and incident trends across both divisions to leadership in a clear, data-driven format — leveraging AI tools and proprietary software to automate reporting and surface insights
  • Collaborate with internal teams to identify opportunities where technology or AI-assisted tools can improve safety processes, training delivery, or compliance tracking
  • Participate in weekly management team meetings, providing safety updates, flagging concerns, and contributing to operational planning
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with dispatch, operations, and HR to embed safety into daily workflows
  • Act as the primary contact for DOT roadside inspections, audits, and regulatory inquiries

Qualifications

Required

  • Valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • Working knowledge of DOT and FMCSA regulations governing commercial motor vehicles, heavy haul, and waste operations
  • Experience with driver qualification files, ELD compliance, HOS rules, and roadside inspection processes
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills — ability to train and influence at all levels of the organization
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities across multiple divisions and maintain meticulous records
  • Comfortable working with AI tools and technology-driven workflows — Burns is an active user of AI across operations and expects this role to leverage these tools for reporting, documentation, training development, and day-to-day efficiency
  • Ability to learn and operate proprietary internal software; prior experience with in-house or custom-built platforms is a plus

Ā

Preferred

  • Prior experience in a safety, compliance, or training role within trucking, heavy haul, waste management, or logistics
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
  • Familiarity with oversize/overweight permitting and escort requirements
  • Experience with fleet management or safety management software
  • NATMI Certified Safety Supervisor (CSS) or Certified Director of Safety (CDS) designation — preferred at hire; required to be obtained and maintained during employment
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Transportation, or a related field
