Position Overview

The Safety Specialist is responsible for supporting and driving safety performance across active jobsites while partnering closely with Superintendents, project teams, and subcontractors to ensure safe project execution and regulatory compliance. This role is highly field-focused and plays a key part in reinforcing Elford’s safety culture through proactive planning, jobsite inspections, training initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts. The Safety Specialist works collaboratively with operations and field leadership to identify and mitigate risks, support incident prevention, and ensure compliance with all company safety standards and federal, state, and local regulations. This role helps maintain safe, organized, and compliant jobsites while supporting the successful delivery of projects across Elford’s portfolio.

Essential Job Functions

  • Conducts and documents regular jobsite safety inspections, audits, and observations to identify risks and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

  • Partners with Superintendents and field leadership teams to proactively plan upcoming work activities and reduce risk through hazard analysis and safe work planning.

  • Supports project start-ups by ensuring site-specific safety plans, safety equipment, signage, and compliance requirements are in place prior to work beginning.

  • Reviews and tracks safety reports, toolbox talks, training documentation, and compliance records to ensure accuracy and completion.

  • Leads and supports investigations related to incidents, injuries, and near misses while identifying root causes and implementing preventative actions.

  • Assists with OSHA inspections and helps maintain readiness and compliance across all active jobsites.

  • Supports and helps facilitate company safety initiatives, employee training programs, orientations, and ongoing educational efforts.

  • Reinforces company safety standards and expectations with subcontractors through active field engagement and participation in preconstruction and pre-task meetings.

  • Reviews subcontractor safety programs and documentation to ensure alignment with Elford safety expectations and project requirements.

  • Assists in the development and implementation of site-specific safety plans, job hazard analyses, and risk assessments.

  • Partners with leadership teams to continuously improve safety programs, procedures, and field performance initiatives.

  • Maintains accurate tracking of employee training, certifications, inspections, and compliance-related documentation.

  • Ensures compliance with all company safety policies, procedures, and reporting standards.

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education / Training

  • Three (3) or more years of construction safety experience required, preferably within commercial construction environments.

  • Experience supporting large-scale commercial or industrial construction projects preferred.

Certifications

  • OSHA 30 or OSHA 500 required.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification preferred but not required.

Skills

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, construction safety standards, and industry best practices.

  • Previous experience supporting large-scale, complex construction jobsites with multiple trades and subcontractors.

  • Exposure to heavy construction scopes, high-risk activities, and fast-paced field operations preferred.

  • Proficiency with safety management systems, construction technology platforms, and reporting tools.

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to build strong working relationships with field leadership, subcontractors, and project teams.

  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to proactively identify hazards, recommend solutions, and support continuous improvement efforts.

Working Conditions

  • Ability to work in a variety of weather conditions, noise levels, uneven terrain, and active construction environments.

  • Must be able to walk jobsites for extended periods, climb ladders, and travel between active projects as needed.

  • Ability to ride and/or drive for extended periods while supporting multiple jobsites and field operations.
