Director of Safety -- Depending on experience, this opportunity may be considered at the VP level.
Job Description Summary:
Under general direction the position is responsible for the daily management of the Company's safety compliance programs to maintain compliance with all applicable laws and regulations to enhance the organization's' safety culture. This includes implementation and enforcement of Company safety and compliance policies with respect to applicable government regulations, laws, and ordinances pertaining to the safety, health and welfare of Company employees and the public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES
 Job Description:
- Provide consultation and guidance to Company management and employees concerning compliance with government regulations, federal, state and local laws, ordinances and company policies.
- Maintain programs, procedures, and practices that enhance and improve the efficient operation of the Compliance department which includes but not limited to Hours of Service, Roadside Inspection, Hazmat, OSHA, IFTA, citations, drug testing and driver qualification files.
- Respond to requests regarding audits, inspections, and site reviews conducted by government agencies and industry safety organizations to ensure a positive outcome and minimize risk.
- Respond to inquiries with government officials on compliance issues to enhance the Company's profile in the transportation community.
- Stay current with regulatory updates to ensure the Company programs and procedures are up to date.
- Assist in training all new employees including scale operators, dispatchers, drivers, etc.Â
- Implement and conduct training programs to educate, inform and establish safe working protocols to enhance the Company's safety culture and risk profile.
- Conduct periodic regulatory audits to monitor compliance program effectiveness and identify areas of non-compliance for remedial correction including but not limited to: Facility Inspections, Route Observations & Audits)
- Attend and participate in Federal, State and Local industry and regulatory conferences to benefit the Company's FMCSA compliance position.
- Other duties or assignments as needed to ensure safety and training needs across the enterprise are met.
SUPERVISORY REQUIREMENTS:
The position supports managers and hourly personnel responsible for but not limited to the areas of Hours of Service, Roadside Inspection, Hazmat, OSHA, IFTA, citations, drug testing and driver qualification files.
 QUALIFICATIONS:

 EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Four to eight years fleet safety compliance experience, a four-year college degree with relevant compliance experience, or a combination of experience and training.Â
- Experience must include working detailed knowledge of materials management, OSHA management, transportation management, etc.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE and ABILITIES
- Ability to deal effectively and tactfully with customers, employees, regulatory/enforcement agents, third party vendors, and medical professionals.Â
- Thorough knowledge of 49 CFR Parts 40, 335-399 (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations),Â
- OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910 and 1926, and MSHA 30 CFR as applicable.Â
- Ability to make decisions in a timely and professional manner, plus have analytical ability, initiative, and problems solving ability.Â
- Mental alertness and adaptability to office and field area work routines.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Preferred: Certified Director of Safety certification, DOT certifications, OSHA certifications
USE OF COMPUTERS, SOFTWARE and EQUIPMENT
Proficiency in computer skills and Microsoft Office, Outlook, Company proprietary software and data systems
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
