Marine Diesel Mechanic

Core Responsibilities

1. Engine Maintenance & Repair — Perform routine service on marine diesel engines, including oil changes, filter replacements, cooling system service, and fuel system maintenance.
2. Diagnostics & Troubleshooting — Identify mechanical, electrical, and fuel-related issues using diagnostic tools, test equipment, and technical manuals.
3. Overhauls & Rebuilds — Conduct partial or full engine overhauls, including disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn components, and reassembly to manufacturer specifications.
4. Fuel System Work — Inspect, clean, and repair injectors, pumps, fuel lines, and filtration systems to maintain proper fuel delivery.
5. Cooling & Exhaust Systems — Service heat exchangers, raw-water pumps, hoses, exhaust manifolds, and aftercoolers to prevent overheating and corrosion.
6. Electrical & Control Systems — Repair or replace starters, alternators, sensors, wiring, gauges, and electronic engine control modules.
7. Propulsion & Drivetrain — Inspect and service transmissions, shafts, propellers, and couplings to ensure smooth power transfer.
8. Recordkeeping — Document repairs, parts used, maintenance schedules, and inspection findings for compliance and customer records.
9. Safety & Compliance — Follow OSHA and maritime safety standards, including lockout/tagout, confined-space procedures, and environmental regulations for fuel and oil handling.

Qualifications:

1. High School diploma or equivalent
1. Physical
   1. Ability to lift and carry 50lbs for extended distances
   2. Ability to work in any and all adverse weather conditions
   3. Ability to climb ladders, stairs and gangways up to 25 feet in height
   4. Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and work above head for extended periods of time
   5. Ability to operate Rio Marine vehicles in a safe and courteous manner
   6. Rio Marine is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week operation, overtime, on-call and some travel is required.
2. Personal Background
   1. Must be capable of acquiring valid TWIC
   2. Must have valid driver’s license
   3. Must have clean driving record with no DWI convictions
   4. Must pass a criminal background check
   5. Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test
3. Practical Experience
   1. Previous experience in electrical service industry
   2. Good communications skills
   3. Professional manner in dealing with other employees, management and customers
   4. Organizational Skills
