Marine Diesel Mechanic
Core Responsibilities
Â
- Engine Maintenance & Repair — Perform routine service on marine diesel engines, including oil changes, filter replacements, cooling system service, and fuel system maintenance.
- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting — Identify mechanical, electrical, and fuel-related issues using diagnostic tools, test equipment, and technical manuals.
- Overhauls & Rebuilds — Conduct partial or full engine overhauls, including disassembly, inspection, replacement of worn components, and reassembly to manufacturer specifications.
- Fuel System Work — Inspect, clean, and repair injectors, pumps, fuel lines, and filtration systems to maintain proper fuel delivery.
- Cooling & Exhaust Systems — Service heat exchangers, raw-water pumps, hoses, exhaust manifolds, and aftercoolers to prevent overheating and corrosion.
- Electrical & Control Systems — Repair or replace starters, alternators, sensors, wiring, gauges, and electronic engine control modules.
- Propulsion & Drivetrain — Inspect and service transmissions, shafts, propellers, and couplings to ensure smooth power transfer.
- Recordkeeping — Document repairs, parts used, maintenance schedules, and inspection findings for compliance and customer records.
- Safety & Compliance — Follow OSHA and maritime safety standards, including lockout/tagout, confined-space procedures, and environmental regulations for fuel and oil handling.

Qualifications:
- Education
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Physical
- Ability to lift and carry 50lbs for extended distances
- Ability to work in any and all adverse weather conditions
- Ability to climb ladders, stairs and gangways up to 25 feet in height
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and work above head for extended periods of time
- Ability to operate Rio Marine vehicles in a safe and courteous manner
- Rio Marine is a 24 hour a day 7 day a week operation, overtime, on-call and some travel is required.
- Personal Background
- Must be capable of acquiring valid TWIC
- Must have valid driver’s license
- Must have clean driving record with no DWI convictions
- Must pass a criminal background check
- Must be able to pass a drug and alcohol test
- Practical Experience
- Previous experience in electrical service industry
- Good communications skills
- Professional manner in dealing with other employees, management and customers
- Organizational Skills
