Job Description:

This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Laboratory Assistant and Support Services position for the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine-Vet Diagnostic Lab at Oregon State University (OSU).

This position will provide daily support services for laboratories throughout the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This includes light janitorial tasks, including empty garbage, recycling, and general cleaning. Additionally, assistance is needed daily to unpack specimens shipped to the laboratory for testing. Strict protocols must be followed to ensure specimen integrity, chain of custody and biosafety. Must be available to work during the hours that packages are received (10 am - 2 pm). If funding permits, employment may be extended through the upcoming school year.

Position Duties

  • Open packages containing specimens sent to the lab for testing. May involve use of a biosafety cabinet if packaging is compromised

  • Triage, sort and stabilize specimens, record information for chain of custody

  • Deliver specimens to laboratories within VRL and Magruder Hall

  • Empty regular trash and recycling from multiple rooms throughout the laboratory

  • General cleaning; may include sweeping, mopping, dusting, etc.

  • Other support tasks as assigned

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study

  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment

  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard

    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program

    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term

    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*

    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term

    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*


*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.

Required

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions without deviation

  • Experience following biological laboratory safety procedures

  • Ability to use both hands to open boxes and lift up to 25 pounds

  • Must be able to document required information for each shipment with legible handwriting

  • Completed courses in biology, zoology, chemistry, medical terminology or related coursework

Preferred

  • Previous work experience in a laboratory

  • A working knowledge of basic medical terminology

Working Conditions/Schedule:

Work schedule is 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM, Monday – Friday, except university holidays when we are closed. Possibility of additional hours if warranted

• Timeliness and attendance during your assigned shift is expected. Unexcused or repeat absences will result in termination.
• May be exposed to specimens that have strong odors, degrading tissue, bodily fluids, blood, fecal material and may contain human pathogens.
