OR Special Procedures Tech II

SUMMARY:

Under general supervision of the Medical Imaging Manager, OR Lead Radiologic Technologist, the Department’s Medical Director, and the surgeon’s regimens and procedure protocols, follows established policies and procedures, uses specialized equipment to produce Picture Archiving and Communications System (PACS) images for surgeons who perform specialized endovascular angiographic examinations in the OR.  Operates high speed PACS imaging equipment to select and capture images for archiving, operates pressure injector for delivering contrast media through catheters that are positioned by the physician. All essential functions performed in the position reflect age specific needs of the geriatric, adult, and pediatric patients. Fosters patient and family centered care and nursing services in accordance with the Lifespan and Rhode Island Hospital mission, vision, and values, with consideration of the life span, including all developmental stages as well as cultural patterns.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Transfer, positions, and instructs patients regarding the procedure to obtain and effect the desired radiographic diagnostic results as specified by the physician; utilizes immobilization and other devices for holding or positioning the patient as necessary.

Provides protection to unaffected areas of the body from radiation exposure utilizing lead shield in accordance with prescribed safety standards.

Calculates and selects proper technical factors such as voltage, current exposure time and focal distance based on such information as patient’s size, physical condition and suspected pathology.  Checks equipment and accessories to ensure they are in proper operating condition.

Assists physician in the performance of specialized examinations preparing contrast media, holding and turning patients, administering contrast media and passing instruments and supplies. Prepares the power injector for proper delivery of contrast material according to protocols that are defined by the surgeon.

Operates x-ray equipment according to specific diagnostic procedure and in conformance to established routines and techniques.  Reviews processed images to ensure that it is of acceptable quality for diagnostic purposes.  Utilizes portable x-ray equipment to execute diagnostic procedures in patient rooms, surgery, and in other instances where it is not feasible to transfer the patient to Diagnostic Imaging.

Reports equipment performance problems and to keep equipment in good functioning condition. Works with vendors as needed to ensure elective / PM repair work can be accomplished in a short a time frame as possible and without interruption of normal OR operations.

Ensures that examinations and other related records are properly completed for proper patient identification, statistical and billing purposes.

Maintains work in a clean and orderly condition and ensures that examination rooms are properly supplied with equipment and materials. Monitors designated and various daily room check lists, order supplies and/or communicate materials needed to lead technologist or coordinator.

Records and completes logs, reports and paperwork that is pertinent to procedures performed (Fluoro time).

Understands and practices ALARA principles of Radiation Protection including the use and exchange of personal dosimeters.

May provide guidance to students or other unit personnel in methods, techniques and procedures.

Review DR and XA Images for technical quality and demographic accuracy before sending to PACS and make necessary corrections in a timely manner. Merge and track incomplete exams to the appropriate patient file.

Is generally responsible for the imaging services during surgical procedure.

Maintain and update Life Chart daily to reflect correct patient charges & adjust supplies for precise date of exam.

Takes responsibility as technologist in charge in the absence of supervisors.

Takes assignments of duties related to documentation, quality control, and computer maintenance.

Work with Manager and Lead Technologist to prepare training, instruction, orientation and evaluation of students. Trains newly hired Radiologic Technologists to work in the endovascular suite as needed. Provides in-service education for students and staff technologists or other staff members and maintains appropriate records.

Prepare monthly QA documentation and ensure it is complete and up to date.

Maintain department workflow and staff efficiently for maximum throughput.

Performs other duties as assigned.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

The interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients, their families, departmental staff, physicians, and others.

Ability to operate all types of x-ray and related equipment, push portable equipment, transfer and position patients.

Conceptual ability to determine means of providing requested radiographs of acceptable diagnostic quality based on specifics of each case.

Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients who may be under physical and/or emotional stress.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists as well as two years formal training in an accredited School of Radiologic Technology required.

Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island.

Meets basic knowledge requirements of Radiologic Technologist.

An in-depth knowledge of advanced imaging equipment and or procedures.

TECHNOLOGIST REQUIREMENTS FOR RADIOLOGY TECH II POSITION:

For consideration of a Radiologic Technologist II position you will require the following:

Two letters of recommendation obtained within the previous three months from technical, supervisory or medical staff members attesting to the technologist’s level of professionalism and technical competency.

Also, two criteria from among the following, selected by the technologist as how he/she will complete the qualification process for the Technologist II position:

Take an active advanced teaching role in one of the Schools of Technology, such as teaching didactic courses, presenting lectures or performing the duties of the clinical coordinator, provided the technologist is qualified under the Essentials and Guidelines of an accredited educational program for the Radiographer adopted by the American College of Radiology, American Medical Association, and American Society of Radiologic Technologists.

Develop new methods of patient tracking of exams, quality control, testing efficiency, safety or quality assurance.

Prepare at least one in-service program to be delivered at least three times in one year. 

The program shall be approved by the American Society of Radiologic Technology for the equivalent of at least one continuing education unit.

Hold an office in or actively serve on a clinical practice committee of a professional organization relevant to the technologist’s specialized modality.

Participate as a regular member of a technical, clinical or quality assurance committee within Diagnostic Imaging as evidenced by minutes of the meeting.

Write and publish an article in a recognized professional journal or receive published acknowledgment by the first author of the technologist’s contribution.

Coordinate the development, implementation and approval for a new procedure or protocol that enhances efficiency and/or quality of work in the section.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 3 years’ experience in the job classification.

Between one and three months orientation and on-the-job training to become familiar with job responsibilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Main Radiology Department or smaller satellite operation where there is little discomfort due to noise, dust or temperature.

Exposed to radiation, but there is little change of illness or injury when established safety procedures are followed.

Continuous standing along with walking, pushing of portable radiographic equipment, lifting and positioning of patients is required.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices.  Refers specific complex problems to the Lead Technologist or Manager when clarification of departmental policies and procedures may be required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Takes responsibility as technologist in charge in the absence of supervisors.
