Nurse Practitioner

SUMMARY:

The Department of Pediatrics/Division of Adolescent Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital (RIH)/Hasbro Children’s is seeking a part-time 20 hours/week nurse practitioner to join its dynamic team at the Rhode Island Training School (RITS), the state’s only juvenile detention facility.

 The nurse practitioner’s role will focus primarily on providing medical care for incarcerated adolescents during their time in the RITS and supporting medical care transition into and out of the facility.  They will work collaboratively with the RITS Medical Director, nursing, and other clinical staff to review clinic operating procedures, engage in quality improvement initiatives, and develop/maintain patient and staff education materials.  Clinical leadership opportunities would be available if the candidate has interest and appropriate skills.  The clinical environment at the RITS includes medical, dental, physical therapy, ophthalmology, psychiatry, and behavioral health services, and seeks to deliver high quality, integrated care to detained youth.

The candidate would join the hospital-affiliated multidisciplinary Adolescent Medicine Division, which provides high-quality, patient centered care and includes physicians, nurse practitioners, a practice manager, nurses, social workers, and dietitians.  Though the candidate’s primary clinical responsibility would be at the RITS, there are opportunities to engage in medical education, research, advocacy, and other professional development activities ongoing within the Division and the Department.  There is the potential to participate in moonlighting for on call coverage at the RITS and/or on the Adolescent Medicine inpatient service at Hasbro.    

Hasbro Children’s is the primary pediatric teaching facility for the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, supporting medical students and the Pediatric, Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and Pediatric/Psychiatry/Pediatric Psychiatry residency programs. Division nurse practitioners are encouraged to participate in the clinical instruction of trainees and to pursue scholarly activities in clinical/laboratory research and/or education.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• demonstrate a fundamental grounding in nursing theory and practice with mastery of knowledge within the defined content area.
• manage a caseload of patients in partnership with the RITS healthcare team to optimize health status and coordinate care over time and across healthcare settings.
• demonstrate leadership in the development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of standards, policies, procedures, and critical paths to support the patient care delivery model.
• oversee care coordination to/from acute, home care, and ambulatory care settings as feasible.
• assist the healthcare team to achieve mutually agreed upon goals by providing necessary support, education and encouragement.
• demonstrate advanced physical and psychosocial assessment skills and knowledge of family dynamics.
• provide direct care to patients in the RITS health clinic.
• perform advanced practice skills under the supervision of the Medical Director.
• provide expert consultation for appropriate clinical issues promoting increased knowledge and skills for the consultee.
• participate in the education, clinical research and mentoring of other healthcare providers as appropriate.
• facilitate patient/family education in area of expertise.
• complete mandatory safety, infection control, and other hospital training requirements.
• Establish and maintain prescriptive privileges per licensure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensure as an advance practice registered nurse (APRN) in the state of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as an APRN in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Master's of Science degree (or higher), graduate of accredited Nurse Practitioner/APRN program. 

Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

EXPERIENCE:

The successful candidate will have at least 2 years’ experience working as an RN followed by at least 1year working as an APRN and experience with and/or a strong interest in adolescent health and/or people involved in the carceral system. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

General juvenile carceral health clinic environment with occasional stressful conditions associated with patient care.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Responds to individual patient-care situations, demonstrating knowledge and skills acquired through education, certification, and work experience.
