Internal Only - Superintendent TLA

Position Overview

The Superintendent is a senior field leader responsible for driving operational excellence across multiple concrete and asphalt projects. While Foremen lead individual jobsites and crews, the Superintendent oversees the broader system—ensuring consistency, developing Foremen, and upholding company standards, safety, and quality across all field operations. This role serves as the central connection point between Project Managers and Foremen, translating project requirements into actionable plans and providing feedback from the field to improve processes. The Superintendent is a mentor, problem-solver, and subject matter expert who leads through others to ensure successful project delivery at scale.

Key Responsibilities

Multi-Project Oversight & Operational Coordination

  • Manage and support multiple active job sites simultaneously, ensuring alignment with company standards, safety practices, and production expectations.
  • Collaborate closely with Project Managers to understand project scopes, schedules, constraints, and customer expectations.
  • Provide guidance to Foremen on production planning, sequencing, technical requirements, and problem-solving.
  • Monitor project progress, budgets, equipment utilization, and crew deployment across all sites.
  • Identify operational patterns and propose improvements that enhance efficiency and consistency across the division.

Leadership Development & “Train-the-Trainer” Support

  • Serve as the primary mentor, coach, and leadership developer for Foremen, ensuring they have the tools, knowledge, and confidence to run their sites effectively.
  • Regularly visit job sites to observe, provide feedback, and support Foreman growth in leadership, technical skills, and crew management.
  • Facilitate training initiatives, skill development, and onboarding practices for new Foremen.
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement throughout field operations.
  • Encourage Foremen to identify and solve problems at the jobsite level while providing guidance on complex issues.

Standards, SOP Development & Quality Assurance

  • Create, refine, and standardize operational SOPs, quality controls, and field processes to ensure consistency across all crews and job types.
  • Ensure Foremen are trained on, understand, and uphold all standards and procedures.
  • Conduct periodic audits of jobsite performance, safety compliance, and quality workmanship.
  • Identify gaps or recurring issues and collaborate with leadership to develop corrective strategies.
  • Drive a culture of excellence by modeling, teaching, and reinforcing predictable, high-quality field practices.

Communication & Information Flow (Up and Down)

  • Act as the key liaison between Project Managers and Foremen, ensuring information moves accurately and efficiently in both directions.
  • Translate project goals, timelines, changes, and risks into clear direction for field teams.
  • Gather insights from job sites and communicate challenges, opportunities, or resource needs back to Project Managers and leadership.
  • Provide regular updates on job status, field conditions, and team performance.
  • Participate in scheduling meetings, project reviews, and cross-department coordination efforts to support operational success.

Safety Leadership & Compliance Oversight

  • Ensure all crews operate in compliance with company safety policies, and industry best practices.
  • Equips and oversee Foremen’s execution of safety meetings, hazard assessments, and daily safety protocols.
  • Conduct safety audits and respond promptly to incidents, near-misses, or compliance concerns.
  • Lead by example by maintaining a visible and proactive presence around safety performance and culture.
  • Partner with AGC to enhance training, documentation, and consistent practices across job sites.

Strategic Problem-Solving & Subject Matter Expertise

  • Move from identifying issues to designing long-term solutions that improve field performance and reduce inefficiencies.
  • Build technical expertise in concrete and asphalt operations, equipment, material processes, and field logistics.
  • Support root-cause analysis efforts and implement corrective actions across crews and projects.
  • Anticipate potential problems and work with Foremen to proactively resolve them before they escalate.
  • Develop the capacity to step in when necessary, while prioritizing leadership through others rather than replacing Foremen’s responsibilities.

Core Competencies

  • Leadership Through Others: Develops, empowers, and elevates Foremen; avoids “doing it all themselves.”
  • System Builder: Creates consistency through SOPs, standards, and scalable processes.
  • Operational Judgment: Makes informed decisions that balance quality, safety, production, and customer expectations.
  • Communication Bridge: Ensures clarity between Project Managers and Foremen, reducing confusion and delays.
  • Problem Solver: Diagnoses issues, provides direction, and implements long-term solutions.
  • Field Presence: Maintains strong visibility and support across multiple job sites.

Performance Success Indicators

  • Foremen demonstrate improved leadership, communication, and jobsite performance.
  • Consistent quality and adherence to SOPs across all field operations.
  • Projects meet or exceed production, safety, and quality expectations.
  • Effective communication flow between PMs and field teams with fewer surprises or escalations.
  • Reduced operational inefficiencies, rework, or safety incidents.
  • High Foreman satisfaction, retention, and team engagement.
