The BMS/Controls Subject Matter Expert (SME) serves as the primary technical authority for Building Management Systems (BMS) and control systems supporting mission-critical data centers. Reporting to the Data Center Manager, this role ensures that monitoring, automation, and control systems operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. The SME provides deep technical knowledge of control logic, programming, and integration across mechanical and electrical systems. This position plays a key role in system optimization, incident response, and training to ensure alignment between Salute, client teams, and site operations.Â

Position Summary
Salute Mission Critical is seeking a Controls Subject Matter Expert for its Data Center Facility Operations team. This role ensures the reliability and quality of Building Management Systems (BMS) across a global fleet of data centers. The ideal candidate will support daily operations and quality initiatives and bring a working understanding of electrical and mechanical systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Own global BMS changes and enhancements, ensuring alignment with data center operations and adherence to safe BMS and SCADA work practices.
- Maintain the integrity of system configurations and component upgrades by applying best practices and change control processes.
- Troubleshoot and document controls and monitoring system objectives to maximize energy efficiency.
- Analyze operating equipment data and adjust building systems to optimize performance.
- Oversee control vendors, system configurations, and component upgrades that support site operations.
- Provide QA/QC oversight for hardware installation, proposals, programming, and commissioning for new construction and retrofit projects, as required.
- Collaborate across disciplines to modify BMS settings and manage building space effectively.
- Deliver technical controls training and support to Facility Operations staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical manuals, CAD drawings, and blueprints.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for working effectively with team members, vendors, and customers in daily data center operations.
- Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and life safety systems associated with critical environments.
- Technical writing proficiency to create and revise process documentation, including MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs.
- Problem-solving and analytical skills to evaluate situations, identify solutions, and work with leadership and teammates to resolve issues.
- Experience working in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- 3 to 5 or more years of experience in environments with a strong emphasis on building controls and monitoring, or relevant military operations.
- Experience beyond the field technician level, including project management, project engineering, or operations management.
- Understanding of programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
- Experience with BMS/EPMS software, ideally Ignition.
- Understanding of protocols such as Modbus and BACnet.
- Baseline knowledge of IT and networking.

Compensation & Benefits Disclosure
The base salary range for this role is $133,200.00 to 150,000.00 annually. This range reflects a good‑faith estimate of what we reasonably expect to pay upon hire, based on factors such as skills, experience, education, and market/location. Our comprehensive benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), gym discount, mental health, Discounted Group Life & AD&D, Discounted Group Short & Long-term Disability, 401(k) retirement matching, PTO/paid holidays, and parental leave. Final compensation will be determined by job‑related factors consistent with applicable law.
