About the Job

JPI has an exciting opportunity for a Technical Lead - MEP to join our DfX team located in Dallas, TX. This role serves as the enterprise MEP technical authority, responsible for driving risk mitigation, constructability, and operational readiness of all building systems from schematic design through turnover.

The Technical Lead – MEP ensures alignment between MEP design intent, construction execution, commissioning, and long-term operations, enabling predictable delivery, reduced lifecycle cost, and high-performing assets. This role partners closely with Development, Design, Construction, Procurement, and Operations to ensure MEP systems are fully integrated into project delivery strategies.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

MEP Strategic Risk Mitigation

  • Establish, implement, and enforce MEP-specific de‑risking frameworks from schematic design through IFC issuance.

  • Proactively identify, escalate, and mitigate systemic MEP risks, including:

    • Power availability and utility coordination

    • Energy code compliance (IECC, ASHRAE, local amendments)

    • Equipment access, maintenance clearances, and serviceability

    • Fire protection and life safety authority coordination

  • Track, analyze, and report portfolio-wide MEP constructability issues, commissioning outcomes, and lessons learned to drive continuous improvement.

  • Lead resolution of MEP-related regulatory, inspection, and AHJ challenges.

MEP Design Strategy & Standards

  • Own, govern, and maintain the MEP design standards library, including:

    • Mechanical system typologies

    • Electrical distribution strategies

    • Plumbing and water conservation standards

    • Fire protection and low-voltage system requirements

  • Ensure consistent translation of standards into consultant documents and BIM models.

  • Lead technical reviews and approvals of MEP design packages at each phase with focus on:

    • Constructability

    • Operational reliability

    • Energy performance

    • Lifecycle cost and maintainability

  • Conduct post-occupancy and system performance evaluations and incorporate findings into future MEP standards and guidelines.

Cross-Functional Coordination & Procurement

  • Lead early engagement with MEP trade partners, consultants, Estimating, Procurement, and Project Management to define system‑level parameters that reduce cost, schedule, and operational risk.

  • Oversee long‑lead MEP equipment planning and alignment with program timelines.

  • Support MEP subcontractor prequalification and technical evaluation processes.

  • Align MEP design release milestones with:

    • Utility provider timelines

    • Permitting and inspection cycles

    • Equipment manufacturing lead times

MEP Value Analysis

  • Lead and approve MEP Best Value decisions in collaboration with Development, Construction, and Design.

  • Ensure all approved value decisions are fully reflected in IFC drawing sets and specifications.

  • Track and evaluate value decisions against:

    • Energy efficiency

    • Maintenance burden

    • Warranty exposure

    • Long-term operating cost

  • Balance first cost considerations with lifecycle performance to optimize system selection.

Operational Readiness, Commissioning & Logistics Coordination

  • Oversee MEP operational readiness strategy, including commissioning, start‑up sequencing, and system turnover planning.

  • Establish protocols for MEP as‑built validation, asset tagging, and documentation completeness.

  • Partner with Construction and Operations teams to enable seamless transition from installation to stabilized operations.

  • Support resolution of MEP‑related warranty issues, start‑up challenges, and early operational concerns.

Non-Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Other duties as assigned. 

Education, Work Experience, & Physical Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.

  • 10+ years in MEP design management and construction, preferably in multifamily or large-scale mixed-use projects.

  • Expert-level understanding of: MEP systems design and coordination, Construction sequencing and phasing, utility coordination and infrastructure planning, commissioning and operational readiness

  • Demonstrated leadership in multifamily or large-scale construction projects.

  • Expert in operational risk mitigation, design documentation, and VDC processes.

  • Strong stakeholder management and team development skills.

  • Act as a representative and advocate of JPI’s culture and guiding principles

  • 5 day (Monday-Friday) Physical Co-location
