POSITION SUMMARY
The Senior Underwriter is a high-ownership underwriting professional responsible for complex risk assessment, pricing, negotiation, and portfolio management. The role serves as a trusted business partner, provides technical guidance to peers, supports modernization initiatives, and contributes to profitable growth through disciplined underwriting decisions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
- Underwrite and manage complex, strategic stop loss and level-funded opportunities, balancing risk appetite with competitive positioning to drive profitable growth.
- Independently develop, present, and defend underwriting recommendations using sound risk analysis and market insight to support sound decision-making.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with sales, actuarial, operations, and leadership to structure and close complex cases.
- Mentor and develop junior underwriters, strengthening team technical proficiency and decision-making capabilities.
- Uphold underwriting governance, consistency, and audit readiness across the book of business.
- Drive reporting, process modernization, and workflow improvement initiatives that increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Monitor portfolio performance, identifying emerging trends, risks, and opportunities to drive strategy.
- Apply independent judgment within established governance and delegated underwriting authority to balance risk, service, and profitability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
- 5+ years of stop loss underwriting experience, with a proven track record of sound risk assessment and decision-making
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex risk portfolios and lead broker negotiations to favorable outcomes
- Experience mentoring team members and reviewing their work, providing constructive feedback that supports professional growth
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability, paired with clear, confident communication across all levels of an organization
