POSITION SUMMARY

The Volunteer Engagement Specialist supports Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity’s mission of building homes, communities, and hope by connecting individuals and groups with meaningful volunteer opportunities. This position coordinates volunteer engagement from recruitment and onboarding through service, retention, and recognition, while serving as a key relationship-builder with volunteers, community partners, corporate groups, and faith-based organizations.

The Specialist works independently on assigned responsibilities and collaborates across departments to ensure volunteer opportunities are organized, well communicated, and provide an excellent volunteer experience.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit, onboard, schedule, and connect individual and group volunteers with construction and non-construction opportunities.
  • Build and maintain relationships with corporate, faith-based, civic, community, school, and other volunteer groups.
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned volunteers and groups, providing timely and welcoming communication before, during, and after service.
  • Represent Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity at volunteer fairs, community events, speaking engagements, and partner meetings.
  • Coordinate orientations, registration, waivers, check-in, welcome activities, and on-site volunteer support.
  • Work closely with Construction and other departments to understand volunteer needs, fill opportunities, and create meaningful volunteer roles.
  • Help ensure volunteers have a positive, organized, safe, and mission-centered experience that encourages continued engagement.
  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, hours, registrations, group information, and engagement history in volunteer management and CRM systems.
  • Support volunteer communications, including opportunity announcements, reminders, follow-up, appreciation, and recognition.
  • Coordinate volunteer-related logistics for special events, community initiatives, organizational projects, and volunteer appreciation activities, including recruitment, registration, scheduling, supplies, communication, and day-of support.
  • Monitor volunteer participation and provide reports or participation information as needed.
  • Identify opportunities to improve volunteer recruitment, retention, systems, processes, communication, and the overall volunteer experience.
  • Take ownership of assigned projects and responsibilities while communicating progress, challenges, and emerging needs to the Senior Manager of Volunteer Services.
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree in a related field preferred; relevant education and professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Two or more years of experience in volunteer engagement, community engagement, nonprofit programming, relationship management, event coordination, customer service, or a related area preferred.
  • Strong relationship-building, organizational, time-management, problem-solving, and follow-through skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including comfort welcoming and speaking to groups.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Ability to build relationships with people from diverse social, cultural, economic, professional, and educational backgrounds.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 and comfort learning volunteer management, CRM, registration, and communication platforms.
  • Knowledge of VolunteerHub and Salesforce is a plus.
  • Experience with Habitat for Humanity, affordable housing, community development, or a mission-driven nonprofit is a plus.
  • Must be available to work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule during active build seasons and occasional evenings as needed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This hybrid position includes office, remote, construction, ReStore, community, and special-event settings. The role may require extended periods of standing or walking and the ability to transport volunteer materials and supplies.
