Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities

Advanced Practice Provider Functions:

  • Provide comprehensive health care services to all pediatric patients

  • Assist in ambulatory care clinics as an active member of the orthopedic team—establishing medical diagnosis(es) and determining a plan of care for short-term health problems, stable chronic health problems, and/or exacerbation of stable chronic health problems

  • Take history of present illness, performs pre- and post-op assessments, and evaluation of children with acute and chronic orthopedic conditions

  • Order and review, with supervising physician’s oversight, routine diagnostic studies and X-rays

  • Involved in preoperative and postoperative planning and ongoing patient care

  • Demonstrate basic medical knowledge of pediatric orthopedics

  • Participate in educational activities of Scottish Rite for Children such as case conferences, symposia, and professional educational meetings

  • Dictate, complete, and/or sign medical records, forms and letters related to patients in an accurate and timely manner

  • Resolve highly complex clinical problems

  • Effectively deal with other clinicians and patients/families

Management Functions:

  • Serve as a specialty area expert within the department regarding Advanced Practice Provider (APP) professional requirements, scope of practice, regulatory and compliance requirements

  • Provide administrative oversight for all APPs in the department to ensure consistent practice principles and operations; oversee and schedule all APP coverage in the department including (but not limited to) annual performance evaluations and payroll management

  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Orthopedics to create new APP opportunities aligned with organizational and departmental strategic initiatives

  • Develop and implement best practice models with expected outcomes, targets, and goals for APPs in the department

  • Seek opportunities to maintain clinical competence and skill proficiency

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Master’s of Physician Assistant Studies or Advanced Practice Nurse Program required 

  • Current licensure with the Texas Medical Board

  • Must hold a current Texas RN License and have graduated from a program recognized by the Texas Board of Nursing Examiners

  • Must possess analytical skills and communication skills

  • Strong desire to work in the pediatric orthopedic setting
