Job Description:  Surface Department Technician

Position Title:  Lab Technician

Employment Type:  Full-Time

Job Summary:

The Surface Department Technician plays a crucial role in the production of high-quality optical lenses. This position is responsible for operating and maintaining equipment used in the surfacing process, which includes generating, grinding, and polishing lenses to precise specifications. The technician ensures that all lenses meet the required standards of quality and accuracy.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lens Generation:
    • Operate automated generating machines to cut lenses from raw material.
    • Ensure accurate dimensions and curvature according to prescription specifications.
  2. Grinding and Polishing:
    • Use automated equipment to grind and polish lenses.
    • Perform regular checks to ensure lenses are free of defects and meet quality standards.
  3. Quality Control:
    • Inspect lenses at various stages of the surfacing process for flaws and deviations.
    • Use precision instruments to verify lens parameters such as thickness, curvature, and surface quality.
    • Document inspection results and take corrective actions when necessary.
  4. Equipment Maintenance:
    • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on surfacing equipment.
    • Perform and document scheduled calibration of surfacing machines and related measuring equipment according to manufacturer specifications and established quality standards.
    • Ensure all machinery is in good working order to prevent production delays.
  5. Process Improvement:
    • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and quality in the surfacing process.
    • Work with the Surface Department Manager to implement process improvements.
  6. Safety and Compliance:
    • Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
    • Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  7. Collaboration:
    • Work closely with other departments, such as the coating and finishing teams, to ensure smooth workflow.
    • Communicate effectively with colleagues to resolve issues and improve processes.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in optical technology or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience in an optical lab or manufacturing environment is advantageous.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in operating surfacing machinery.
