Job Summary

The Puller is responsible for locating, selecting, and staging plant material to fulfill customer orders and transfers between Devil Mountain nursery locations. This role ensures that the correct plants are pulled according to order specifications, that plant quality standards are maintained, and that inventory is accurately tracked using company systems.

 

Pullers work closely with Crew Leaders, Yard Management, and office staff to support efficient order fulfillment, maintain organized yard operations, and ensure plant material is handled carefully and prepared for customer pickup or delivery.

 

Essential Functions

  • Identify plants accurately based on plant variety, size, quality, and health.
  • Follow direction from Crew Leaders regarding which zones or areas to pull plant material from.
  • Pull plant material that meets company quality standards and is acceptable for customer orders.
  • Utilize the RF Smart scanner to confirm correct plant selection and maintain accurate inventory updates.
  • Assist with manual picks, yard order builds, and front counter orders as needed.
  • Reconcile discrepancies and ensure pulled material is properly reflected in inventory systems.
  • Operate tractors, RTVs, or electric carts with trailers to move plant material throughout the nursery.
  • Ensure plants have been watered before staging in Will-Call or delivery areas.
  • Assist customers in the yard with locating plant material and loading plants when needed.
  • Communicate with office staff and yard personnel regarding order status and pulling requests.
  • Monitor radio communications and respond to requests from other departments as needed.
  • Utilize and maintain required personal protective equipment (PPE) and company equipment properly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of nursery grounds to ensure safe conditions for employees, customers, and vendors.
  • Handle nursery stock carefully and ensure plants are properly watered and placed in designated areas.

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist other nursery departments as needed.
  • Support general yard operations and order fulfillment activities.
  • Duties are subject to change at any time per management’s discretion.

 

Experience & Other Requirements

Required

  • Ability to identify plant material and recognize quality and health standards.
  • Ability to follow direction and work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with Crew Leaders, yard staff, and office personnel.
  • Ability to safely operate basic nursery equipment including carts, tractors, or RTVs when assigned.
  • Strong attention to detail when selecting plant material and fulfilling orders.

 

Preferred

  • Previous experience working in a nursery, landscape, or agricultural environment.
  • Experience using handheld scanners or inventory tracking systems.

 

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position is performed primarily outdoors in active nursery yard environments.

 

Work conditions include varying weather conditions, uneven ground surfaces, active equipment and vehicle traffic, and exposure to dust, plant material, fertilizers, and typical nursery conditions. Required personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as applicable.

 

Physical requirements include:

 

  • Extensive walking throughout the nursery yard during the workday.
  • Frequent bending, twisting, turning, squatting, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Working on uneven surfaces including dirt, gravel, plant material, and irrigated areas.
  • Use of hands and fingers for grasping and moving plant material.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs independently (approximately 75% of the time).
  • Participating in team lifts up to 100 lbs (approximately 25% of the time).
