Job Summary

The Sous Chef supports the daily culinary operations of a residential healthcare facility serving approximately 85 residents. This role reports directly to the Director of Food & Nutrition Services and plays a key hands‑on role in delivering high‑quality, nutritious meals that support resident health, satisfaction, and regulatory requirements.

The Sous Chef is actively involved in food production, menu execution, and staff support, ensuring meals are prepared safely, consistently, and in alignment with resident preferences and therapeutic dietary needs.

This position is well suited for a culinary professional who values teamwork, structure, and meaningful service in a resident‑focused healthcare environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the Director of Food & Nutrition Services with day‑to‑day culinary operations, including food production, staffing support, and workflow organization
  • Execute menus and daily meal service, ensuring meals meet nutritional guidelines, therapeutic diet requirements, and resident preferences
  • Participate in batch and institutional cooking for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and special meals
  • Assist with food cost management, inventory control, ordering, and waste reduction
  • Support catered meals and special events for resident activities, holidays, and community functions
  • Supervise and coach hourly culinary team members, reinforcing food safety, sanitation, and service standards
  • Assist with the implementation of new culinary programs, recipes, and service initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, food safety standards, and sanitation policies
  • Contribute to resident satisfaction initiatives and quality improvement efforts
  • Collaborate with nursing, clinical, and interdisciplinary teams as needed to support resident care

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree (A.S.) in Culinary Arts or equivalent professional culinary experience
  • Progressive culinary or kitchen leadership experience, preferably in healthcare, senior living, or institutional foodservice
  • Experience with batch cooking and smaller‑scale residential operations preferred
  • Strong understanding of modified and therapeutic diets (e.g., texture‑modified, allergen‑sensitive meals)
  • Knowledge of food safety, sanitation standards, nutrition requirements, and cost control practices
  • Experience working in a regulated or resident‑focused environment highly desirable
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office and email
  • Willingness to participate in resident satisfaction initiatives and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • ServSafe certification highly desirable
