Job Summary

Ultrasound Technologists (Sonographers) are responsible for the administration of multi-frequency sound waves and other techniques for diagnostic, therapeutic or research purposes. A sonographer performs sonographic imaging procedures and acquires and analyzes data needed for diagnosis at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed practitioner. Ultrasound Technologists independently perform or assist the licensed practitioner in the completion of sonographic imaging procedures. Ultrasound Technologists prepare, administer and document activities related to medications in accordance with federal and state laws, regulations, or lawful institutional policy.

Job Duties

  • Ensures correct order is obtained, patient is properly identified and prepared for exam, and that clinical history is corroborated and appropriately documented while respecting confidentiality.
  • Utilizes appropriate imaging protocol and optimizes technical factors while maximizing patient safety, optimizing patient care, and applying principles of ALARA (As Low as Reasonably Achievable). 
  • Preparing and/or administering, as applicable, medications through new or existing vascular access site as prescribed by a licensed practitioner.  
  • Evaluates images for proper positioning and acceptable technical quality and verifies archival storage and/or transfer of data, post processing of data if applicable. 
  • Educating and monitoring students and other health care providers. 
  • Collaborates with a licensed practitioner in the performance of sonographic interventional procedures.
  • Ensuring equipment parameters for diagnostic and interventional procedures are of optimal technical and administrative quality as requested by a licensed practitioner.
  • Performing diagnostic, interventional, sonographic procedures as prescribed by a licensed practitioner or during appropriate educational activities.
  • Independently reviews symptoms and medical history to determine the correct exam for the patient.
  • Evaluate orders and requests for procedures to assure correct scheduling of patient exams.
  • Performs noninvasive vascular laboratory tests (if applicable).
  • Independently provides preliminary interpretation of the test results (if applicable), including level of disease, incidental findings, results, outliers, contradictory and unexpected test results, and need for additional testing, urgency of care and reporting to provider.

Position Details

The following certification required upon hire:

  • Certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist (ARRT) as a sonographer or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) certification and
    • Radiology: ARDMS (preferred ABD, OB/GYN) credential required upon hire.  If vascular credential is required at site – ARDMS (RVT) or RVS credential must be obtained within one year of hire.
    • Maternal Fetal Medicine:  ARDMS (OB/GYN) required upon hire.
    • Adult Echocardiography:  ARDMS (AE) certification required within 6 months of hire.
    • Pediatric Echocardiography: ARDMS (AE) preferred.
    • Vascular:  ARDMS (RVT) or RVS credential required upon hire.

Applicants hired after March 10, 2024, must complete steps required for advancing to level 2 within 24 months.


Education

Graduate from Specialty Training Program-Radiologic Technology (Required), Bachelor's Degree-Related Field of Study (Preferred)

Experience

Minimum of 1 year-Related work experience (Preferred)
