Orthopedic Cast Technician

Department: Orthopedics
Reports To: DME Coordinator/Market Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

The Orthopedic Cast Technician is responsible for the application, removal, and maintenance of orthopedic casts, splints, braces, and traction equipment as directed by an orthopedic physician or advanced practice provider. This position supports patient care by assisting with fracture management, maintaining clinical equipment, educating patients on cast care, and ensuring safe and effective immobilization techniques in accordance with established orthopedic standards and guidelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical Support

  • Apply, modify, and remove casts, splints, and other orthopedic immobilization devices as directed by the provider. 
  • Assist physicians and advanced practice providers during fracture reductions, cast applications, and other orthopedic procedures. 
  • Measure and fit patients for orthopedic braces, splints, walking boots, and other durable medical equipment (DME). 

Patient Education

  • Instruct patients and caregivers on proper cast and splint care. 
  • Educate patients regarding signs of complications such as swelling, circulation problems, skin breakdown, or infection. 
  • Provide guidance on mobility restrictions, weight-bearing instructions, and use of assistive devices as directed by the provider. 

Clinical Operations

  • Prepare and maintain casting materials and orthopedic supplies. 
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of casting and procedure areas. 
  • Assist with stocking and inventory of casting materials, braces, and supplies. 
  • Ensure proper documentation of procedures and patient interactions in the electronic medical record. 

Patient Care and Safety

  • Monitor patient comfort and safety during procedures. 
  • Recognize complications related to immobilization and notify the provider immediately. 
  • Maintain infection control standards and clinical safety protocols. 

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 

Certification (Preferred or Required)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification may be required depending on practice policy. 

Experience

  • Previous experience in orthopedic clinical settings preferred. 
  • Experience with cast and splint application techniques strongly preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of orthopedic anatomy, fracture management, and immobilization techniques. 
  • Proficiency in fiberglass and plaster casting techniques. 
  • Ability to fit and adjust orthopedic braces and durable medical equipment. 
  • Strong patient communication and education skills. 
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment. 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods. 
  • Frequent bending, lifting, and positioning of patients. 
  • Ability to lift or assist patients weighing up to 50 pounds. 
  • Manual dexterity required for casting and splinting procedures.
