Title:   Heavy Equipment Operator                           

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Department:  Highway

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Incumbent operates various types of heavy equipment for the construction, maintenance and repair of county roads and culverts.  


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS;

  • Drives and operates loaders, graders and Gradall for assigned tasks.
  • Plans, lays out grade and installs materials as assigned by Superintendent.
  • Builds retaining walls for washouts.
  • Checks equipment for proper fuel and lubrication levels and general maintenance needs, reporting serious problems or unfamiliar difficulties to shop mechanic.
  • Performs snow removal from and sands county roads with heavy equipment as required.
  • Digs ditches, grades and shoulders right-of-ways.
  • Loader Operator loads and/or dumps stone and sand under this description.
  • Drives and operates heavy equipment and occasionally light vehicles as assigned for hauling of materials for repair of county roads.
  • Drives vehicle to and from assigned work sites within the county.
  • Acts as site foreman while operating highway equipment on assigned tasks unless designated otherwise.

 

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in traffic control at work site and/or accident scenes.
  • Occasionally operates machinery and hand tools for maintenance of county roads.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have and maintain Indiana Commercial Driver’s License
  • General knowledge of procedures used in basic road construction and maintenance
  • Ability to operate maintenance tools and equipment
  • Ability to operate heavy vehicles and related equipment such as highway trucks, loaders, and Gradall, safely and efficiently under all weather conditions
  • Must be insurable to drive county vehicles without additional liability
  • Ability to use memory, judgment, and ingenuity in planning and laying out work
  • Ability to operate transit and level
  • Ability to read blueprints


RESPONSIBILITY:

Incumbent receives daily work and periodic task assignments from Superintendent.  Judgment is required in operating heavy motor vehicles on county roads negotiating traffic and obstacles as necessary.  Work consists of complex varied standard tasks, processes or operations.  Work is not independent of supervisory controls.  Instructions are general and may be modified to be applied in a particular manner.  Incumbent makes decisions and judgments affecting quality and adequacy of work.  High degree of accuracy is required in order to protect tools, materials, and prevent injury to others.  Application of skills required in performance of assigned tasks.  Errors could result in excessive risk and cost repercussions.  The safety of the general public could be jeopardized, resulting in costly repairs and personal injury to the general public and county.


WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

Working relationships are with supervisor, associates in same department, other county departments, and the general public.


WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work requires occasional moderate to heavy lifting with occasional standing, bending and carrying.  Vehicles are operated under all weather conditions, sometimes for extended periods of time.  At times required to work under inclement weather conditions.  Occasional strain of moderate intensity, but normally not for extended periods of time.  Injury may occur with equipment malfunction or by vehicle accident on county roadway.  Prolonged exposure to dust, grease, extreme temperatures, severe weather conditions, noise, fumes, vibrations, or moving parts.
