Job Summary

The ICU & IMCU Manager is responsible for the implementation of the vision, mission, philosophy and core values of the organization and of Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center within defined areas of responsibility as well as for establishing and fulfilling department-specific strategic and operational goals and objectives. Accountable to the Director of Critical Care Services to maintain 24/7 leadership and supervision of designated departments so that safe, quality, cost-effective and comprehensive services are provided. Directs the nursing practice of professionals and support personnel in accordance with standards of practice as defined by the Kentucky Board of Nursing and in accordance with the Ephraim McDowell Health nursing professional practice model and collaborative interdisciplinary care delivery system. Coordinates nursing care with physicians and others in a manner that promotes shared nursing leadership and collaboration with other disciplines to accomplish patient and family-centered care.  Exhibits F.I.R.S.T values (Friendliness, Innovation, Respect, Service and Trust).

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Performs Competent Nursing Practice and Accepts Accountability for Nursing Services Provided to Patients and Families.
  2. Maintains a keen awareness of clinical developments within area of nursing practice responsibility.
  3. Becomes EMH expert resource in Critical Care Services, including clinical service components, linkages across settings, integrating chronic care support, and collaborating with practitioners.
  4. Possesses instinctive ability to prioritize and to identify critical responsibilities and activities.
  5. Accountable for problem solving and critical thinking.
  6. Effectively organizes workload and plans time efficiently in order to meet deadlines.
  7. Applies knowledge and skills to the practice of critical care nursing.
  8. Serves as a patient advocate when appropriate.
  9. Promotes the best schedule, and patient plan of care according to identified needs and based on nursing assessment in collaboration with patient, family, and healthcare team by monitoring nursing practice and intervening as necessary.
  10. Ensures evidence-based practice by participating in and involving Associates in evaluative research activities.
  11. Provides guidance for and supervision of Associates by directly leading and evaluating Associates’ performance.
  12. Evaluates performance of Associates by conducting annual performance summary/competency review and completes prior to due date.
  13. Uses the electronic appraisal process as a tool for Associate and organizational improvement, career development and succession planning.
  14. Prepares and administers corrective action and terminations in a confidential manner with diplomacy based on organizational policies and guidelines.
  15. Fosters leadership and growth among Associates.
  16. Identifies and grooms potential leaders
  17. Ensures appropriate orientation, education, credentialing and continuing professional development for Associates.
  18. Provides or facilitates educational experiences for nursing and other students.

WORKING CONDITIONS, HAZARDS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

Works in a well-lighted, ventilated and air conditioned area. Long periods of standing, walking, stooping heavy lifting and bending are required. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. independently.

Qualifications

Minimum of four (4) years of clinical expertise required.
