The Ophthalmology Payment Poster is responsible for overseeing and performing accurate, timely posting of insurance and patient payments for ophthalmology and optometry services. This role is responsible for payment posting, contractual adjustments, and reconciliation. The payment poster ensures compliance with payer contracts, identifies posting discrepancies, and supports overall revenue cycle performance.

Key Responsibilities

Payment Posting & Reconciliation

Leverage available technology to assist with payment posting, monitoring and reviewing payments that are auto posted for accuracy.
Accurately post insurance payments, patient payments, refunds, and contractual adjustments in accordance with payer contracts and internal policies
Reconcile Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and Electronic Remittance Advice (ERAs)
dentify and resolve posting discrepancies, underpayments, overpayments, and unapplied balances
Perform daily balancing to ensure the Practice Management Systems reflect the work performed.
Participate in education performed for charge entry and AR functions to ensure a full understanding

Oversight Responsibilities

Monitor daily and monthly posting productivity, accuracy, and turnaround times
Conduct quality audits to ensure compliance with posting standards and payer rules
Assist with onboarding and training of new payment posting staff
Develop and maintain payment posting workflows, job aids, and standard operating procedures
Complete daily payment reporting as assigned.

Revenue Cycle Support

Collaborate with AR, coding, and denial teams to resolve posting-related issues impacting collections
Identify trends in underpayments or payer inconsistencies and escalate as needed
Support month-end close activities, balancing, and reporting
Assist with payer contract interpretation related to payment application

Compliance & Process Improvement

Ensure compliance with HIPAA, payer regulations, and internal controls
Recommend process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and cash flow
Participate in revenue cycle meetings and special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree preferred
Minimum 3–5 years of medical payment posting experience, preferably in ophthalmology or surgical specialties
Demonstrated knowledge of EOBs, ERAs, CPT/HCPCS codes, modifiers, and payer contracts
Strong attention to detail with proven accuracy in high-volume environments
Experience leading, training, or mentoring staff preferred
Experience with ophthalmology billing, including global surgery and ASC-related payments
Familiarity with ophthalmic EHR and practice management systems
Understanding of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer payment methodologies
Prior experience with audits, reporting, or revenue cycle metrics
Must possess the physical, mental, and cognitive skills needed to complete essential tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing, and integrating information for comprehension, problem-solving, and timely decision-making.
