The Security team is seeking part-time Security Officers for the day shift. These positions play a critical role in maintaining a safe and secure environment for all staff, students, and guests across The Henry Ford, including the Henry Ford Academy and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting routine patrols, monitoring for suspicious or unusual activity, and protecting The Henry Ford’s property, artifacts, and people. A positive, professional, and approachable demeanor is essential, as we value team members who can deliver a welcoming presence while ensuring safety and supporting a positive experience for our diverse community of guests, staff, and students.

 

Role Responsibilities

  • Patrol assigned areas of the museum, village, and the Ford Rouge Factory Tour to ensure facility security, prevent unauthorized access, and safeguard against fire, theft, vandalism, and other hazards
  • Monitor buildings and property for suspicious behavior or potential threats; respond and report according to established protocols
  • Monitor building mechanics (e.g., heating, air conditioning, plumbing) and report irregularities such as fire & safety hazards, leaking pipes, or unsecured doors and windows
  • Occasionally transport staff to medical facilities, as directed for testing or further medical treatment
  • Respond promptly to on-site accidents or incidents; provide First Aid/CPR/AED assistance as trained, and complete incident reports accurately
  • Assist in emergency response procedures including evacuations, lockdowns, and shelter-in-place protocols; provide direction to guests and staff during emergencies
  • Deliver courteous, professional customer service to diverse guests, students, and staff; offer assistance and respond to inquiries as needed
  • Observe and recommend improvements related to safety, fire prevention, and overall security procedures
  • Operate the security console and dispatch system, monitor CCTV footage, and respond to fire and intrusion alarms; Requires basic computer proficiency, multitasking skills, and effective radio communication
  • Assists with directing traffic flow and parking management during high-visitation days and special events
  • Conduct personal and vehicle checks of staff and contractors when directed by security leadership; ensure all checks are performed respectfully and professionally
  • Enforce access control and post orders; maintain awareness of entry points and perform regular checks of gates, doors, and perimeter fence lines
  • Submit detailed daily shift reports and maintain accurate, timely incident logs, activity reports, and documentation for all security events, accidents, or suspicious activity throughout the shift
  • Respond swiftly to security incidents and follow established protocols
  • Coordinate with law enforcement or emergency responders when necessary
  • Work collaboratively with the security team, guest services, talent & culture teams and other departments
  • Stay informed of and enforce organizational safety, conduct, and security policies; intervene when violations occur and escalate to leadership as appropriate
  • Performs related functions as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary coursework or training in Criminal Justice, Military, Public Safety, EMT, or related fields preferred
  • Prior experience in security, fire safety, or public safety strongly desired
  • Valid Driver’s license and reliable transportation required
  • Must maintain in-house certifications in First Aid, CPR/AED, and Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Must meet all physical and mental requirements of the position, including the ability to work both indoors and outdoors, climb stairs and ladders, and respond promptly to incidents in all weather conditions
  • Must successfully complete The Henry Ford’s Minimum Physical Standards Testing Program within 90-day probationary period and maintain those standards throughout employment
  • Must pass a background check and may be subject to random drug screening

 

 

MINIMUM PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: As defined by The Henry Ford Field Training Module; candidates will be required to meet these standards:

  • Walk one (1) mile without stopping
  • Run 100 yards without stopping
  • Lift and hold 20 lbs for 30 seconds
  • Lift 20 lbs and walk 75 ft in under 60 seconds
  • Ascend two flights of stairs without stopping, then descend two flights of stairs without stopping
  • Assume a kneeling position from standing, then assume a standing position from kneeling

PHYSICAL/MENTAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical:

  • Standing/Walking: Constant
  • Sitting/Running: Occasionally
  • Climbing: Must be able to climb multiple flights of stairs and ladders
  • Kneeling: Must be able to kneel to perform CPR/First Aid for extended periods
  • Lifting: Routinely lift 30–50 lbs.; occasionally lift 50+ lbs. when necessary to ensure guest safety
  • Vision: Normal vision required (corrective lenses permitted)
  • Hearing: Normal hearing required (hearing aids permitted)

  • Ability to respond quickly and remains highly alert in fast-changing or high-stress situations
  • Above average verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Sharp attention to detail and strong focus during prolonged periods of surveillance or routine patrol
  • Identifies, analyzes, and investigates incidents with sound judgment and logical reasoning
  • Exercises discretion and professionalism when handling sensitive or high-stakes situations
  • Demonstrated personal character, temperament, and judgment to respond effectively to incidents
  • Follows instructions and applies policies with consistency and accuracy
  • Documents incidents and activity clearly, using precise and objective language
  • Engages with guests and staff calmly and respectfully, even in challenging circumstances
