Overview

Certified Anesthesiologist Assistants (CAAs) are highly skilled health professionals who work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists. Under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist, the Certified Anesthesia Assistant聽provides patient care during anesthesia administration, including monitoring vital signs, assisting with airway management, administering medications, and responding to emergencies in the operating room.聽

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities and Essential Functions

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Administers anesthesia under the direction of an anesthesiologist.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Performs initial acute cardio-pulmonary resuscitation in life-threatening situations as directed by an anesthesiologist.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Establishes multi-parameter monitoring of patients prior to, during and after anesthesia or in other acute care situations. This may include invasive / non-invasive monitoring under the direct supervision of an anesthesiologist. Also, other monitoring as may be developed for anesthesia and intensive care use may be incorporated.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Manages perioperative anesthetic care, including ventilatory support and other respiratory care parameters as directed by an anesthesiologist.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Assists in research projects as carried out by an anesthesiologist.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Instructs others in principles and practices of anesthesia, respiratory care and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as directed by the anesthesiologist.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Assists an anesthesiologist in gathering routine perioperative data.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Provide emergency medical services in the event of declared national emergency or natural disaster in accordance with the requirements of Board Rules.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 The choice of anesthesia and drugs to be employed are prescribed by an anesthesiologist for each patient except:

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 (a) where standard orders for the conduct of specified anesthetic are prescribed; and

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 (b) where life threatening emergencies arise necessitating the utilization of standard therapeutic

聽聽 聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽or resuscitation procedures. An anesthesiologist will be immediately available for consultation

聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 regarding changes from standard procedures.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 ADDITIONAL DUTIES REQUESTED FOR THE ANESTHESIOLOGIST ASSISTANT (i.e., procedures requiring additional training).

Qualifications

Education Required

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP).

License, Certification and/or Registration

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Successful completion of CEAA.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Maintains current licensure requirements for CAA practice under National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants.

路聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 ACLS, BLS, PALS from American Heart Association.
