Overview

Job Summary:

Provides leadership / oversight responsibilities for the Clinical Laboratory, Blood Bank and Pathology departments for both DMH campuses, managing the departments with effectiveness and efficiency. Manages departments in accordance of CLIA, CAP and TJC guidelines and regulations.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities / Essential Functions

 

A.         Directs the performance of medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.

 

1.   Has a thorough understanding of hospital and department policies. Establishing goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for the department in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the hospital.  Works closely with the Laboratory Medical Director and Administrative VP to achieve these goals and objectives.

2.   Ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of department on a daily basis while striving to accomplish the mission of Decatur General.

3.   Takes responsibility for the performance of the staff to meet the demands of the Clinical Laboratory by:

     ▪    Striving to ensure efficiency and effectiveness within established productivity standards

                                    ▪    Conducting departmental operations in a         

                                          professional manner

                                     ▪   Exercising positive communications with  

                                         physicians, subordinates and patients.

4.   Coordinates staffing of departments to assure that procedures are completed in a timely fashion by:

                                     ▪   Meeting expected turnaround times.

                                     ▪   Striving to optimize staffing to maintain fiscal 

                                           integrity. 

     ▪   Striving to be as flexible with the schedule as 

                                      possible to give employees requested time off

                                      while insuring that the laboratory is sufficiently

                                           staffed to provide adequate patient care.

5.   Ensures the fiscal integrity of the department with regards to compliance with policies and directives for the operational expenditures, striving to be as efficient as possible without affecting quality of patient care.

6.   Effectively manages and coordinates the processes required to meet CLIA, CAP, and JCAHO regulatory requirements. Actively works to assure a successful CAP and JCAHO accreditation inspection.

7.   Successfully communicates pertinent information and provides a receptive interface with other departments to keep the department performing at peak performance levels.

8.   Maintains an open channel of communication with the Laboratory Medical Director and Administrative VP regarding pertinent personnel, operational, and interdepartmental interactions. Supports final decision outcomes.

9.   Strives to treat every employee equally and fairly so that they feel that they are a valuable part of the Laboratory team.

10.  Remains current with technology and methods by attending periodic job related seminars and conferences.

11.  Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider alternatives and choose an appropriate course of action

 

B.         Follows required regulatory guidelines and acceptable practices

 

13.  Follows CAP and other regulatory guidelines governing acceptable practice and protocol for laboratory practices

14.  Is aware of Patient Safety Goals and strives to meet them.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required:

 

Education:  Must have successfully met the requirements for “Lab Supervisor” as specified by CLIA 88 guidelines. Must have achieved MT / CLS certification by ASCP, AMT or other nationally recognized certifying agency. Bachelor degree in Medical Technology or related Science field is required.

 

Experience: Must have minimum of 10 years Medical Technology experience with 5 years of supervisory experience preferred.
