Position Summary:

The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) is a skilled and dedicated healthcare professional responsible for providing basic and limited advanced emergency medical care to patients in the pre-hospital environment. Working under the supervision of a Paramedic or Medical Director, the AEMT performs patient assessments, administers certain medications, and executes various medical interventions. This role is vital for bridging the gap between basic life support (BLS) and advanced life support (ALS), ensuring a higher level of care can be initiated swiftly to stabilize patients during transport.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Patient Care and Assessment:
    • Responds to emergency calls and performs rapid, systematic patient assessments to determine the nature and extent of illness or injury.
    • Provides basic life support (BLS) interventions including CPR, bleeding control, splinting, and basic airway management.
    • Administers limited advanced life support interventions, which may include intravenous (IV) fluid therapy, certain medication administrations (e.g., D50, Glucagon, Albuterol, Epinephrine), and advanced airway adjuncts (e.g., supraglottic airways; SGA) as per scope of practice and protocol.
    • Monitors vital signs and patient status continuously, recognizing changes and reporting them to higher-level providers or receiving facility staff.
    • Prepares and maintains accurate, complete, and timely patient care reports (PCRs) documenting all findings, interventions, and patient responses.
  • Operational Duties:
    • Assists in the safe and efficient operation of emergency vehicles, including navigation and proper use of warning devices.
    • Ensures the ambulance and medical equipment are clean, organized, properly stocked, and in good working order before, during, and after shifts.
    • Communicates effectively and professionally with dispatch, hospital staff, public safety agencies, and other healthcare providers.
    • Adheres strictly to all state and local EMS regulations, company policies, and medical protocols.
  • Teamwork and Professionalism:
    • Works collaboratively with EMTs and Paramedics to ensure coordinated and comprehensive patient care.
    • Maintains a professional demeanor, showing empathy, compassion, and respect for all patients and their families.
    • Participates in ongoing training and continuing education to maintain licensures and enhance skills.



Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in basic and limited advanced emergency medical procedures and patient assessment techniques.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to react effectively in dynamic and stressful emergency situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for clear patient interaction, accurate documentation, and effective team coordination.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team, taking direction and contributing to a positive work environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of EMS protocols, HIPAA regulations, and patient confidentiality guidelines.
  • Competence in operating and maintaining emergency medical equipment.
  • Emotional stability and resilience to manage challenging and emotionally charged situations.
  • Strong organizational skills to maintain equipment and documentation.



Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess a valid Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) certification from a state-recognized and accredited program.
  • Current state AEMT license is mandatory.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be preferred or required by some services.
  • Prior experience as an EMT is often preferred.



Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move patients and equipment weighing up to 150 lbs, often with assistance from a partner.
  • The role frequently requires kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, and standing for extended periods to provide patient care.
  • Ability to work in various environmental conditions, including extreme weather, confined spaces, and hazardous scenes.
  • Must possess the physical stamina and endurance to work long shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and respond to emergencies at any time.



Other Duties:
