Job Summary

The Lead Production Specialist – Sulfur is the primary technical/process expert for process units SR-3/4/5/6/7/8, ARU-6/7, SWS-2, and Girbotol at PEMEX Deer Park Refinery. He/she has a leading role in supporting the production team to achieve HS&E, reliability, and cash objectives. The Lead Production Specialist (PS) is the focal point for technical assurance and is a key contributor to maintaining the integrity of process safety work processes (ESP, RCM, T&P, MOC, PHA, PSSR, etc.).

The PS communicates operations issues, constraints, and plant/unit status to associated work groups in the production team. He/she participates in short-term and medium/long-term planning and improvement initiatives and is a key resource for turnaround planning. He/she plays a lead role in the communication of unit-specific issues to the technical support organization and is the primary focal point for prioritizing the resolution of those issues. The PS interfaces with the production teams regarding unit optimization, product specs, and target ranges.

The PS works with the department training coordinator to develop effective training material. He/she provides support for operator skill enhancement, performance reviews, and qualification of operators. He/she continues to build technical knowledge and troubleshooting skills in the process he/she is responsible for and shares that knowledge with others on the team. The PS assists the Hydroprocessing/Sulfur/Aromatics Production Team in enhancing their troubleshooting skills overall. He/she has responsibility for accuracy of procedures and performing the required review processes.
 


Accountabilities & Responsibilities: 

Health, Safety & Environmental

• Understands and adheres to all policies, procedures and guidelines pertaining to safety, health and environmental emphasizing this perspective in their own work and in the work of others. The PS demonstrates Safety & Environmental Leadership in prioritizing work. They assure that HSE processes within the department are working as expected.


Process and Equipment Ownership

• The PS is the Technical subject matter expert for the operating area.


Communication

• Effectively exchange information, instructions, and ideas within own work group and with other cross-functional groups

• Takes short term plan requirements and provides daily guidelines for operating team (24/7).

• Works with 24/7 Operational leadership to understand unit and system interfaces plus communicate threats to plan.

• Consultation role for long term business/capital planning.

• Encourage and evaluate profitability and cost reduction ideas and suggestions concerning unit performance.

• Provides input for T/A planning and major outages.


Leadership and Team Focus

• He/she must be a team player that works effectively with the Production Team and other key support organizations and understands each member’s roles and responsibilities.

• Although no administrative lines over the 24x7 organization, plays a critical role in performance and development of the 4 shift team leaders, OMCs and operators for his/her respective units along with technical support disciplines.

• Ability to coordinate cross-functional team comprised of operating staff and technical support staff.

• Lead role on Focus and Finish team.


Problem Solving/Decision Making/Troubleshooting

• Use fact based, structured decision-making process to initiate and support appropriate actions.

• Displays expertise in the use of structured problem analysis to make timely and effective decisions and promotes use of problem-solving techniques in the work group.

• Assists operations team in troubleshooting issues and providing additional technical support as required.

• Understands risk assessment and application of the Reliability Assessment Matrix (RAM).

• Ensures department procedures are effective in establishing work practices to respond to abnormal conditions.

• Supports 24x7 operations in necessary actions to stabilize, slowdown, or shutdown the process(s) if warranted to avoid operation beyond any Critical Limits.

 

Emergency Responsiveness

• Recognizes symptoms of an emergency and responds appropriately keeping HSE as the top priority.

• Understands own role and the role of others during an emergency.

• Ensures the quality of emergency drills will provide 24x7 operations the needed skills to respond to emergency situations.

• Ensures that the 24x7 operations have the necessary skills and knowledge to initiate actions required to stabilize, slowdown, or shutdown the process(s) to avoid operation beyond any Critical Limits.

Job Knowledge, Skills & Experience 

Technical Skills

• Use a fact based, structured process for resolving equipment and process issues

• Understand the competencies in the console and outside operator models to be able to coach and mentor the 24x7 organization.

• Have a thorough knowledge of process control and optimization.

• Excellent troubleshooting skills

• Effective mentor to PTLs and Operators

Education and Experience: 

  • 10+ years of experience in refinery/petrochemical manufacturing operations
  • 5+ years of experience operating sulfur plants, sour water strippers, and amine gas treatment plants
  • Qualified, previously qualified, or able to demonstrate skill/mastery of PEMEX Deer Park’s Sulfur and Amine console operator jobs and Sulfur North, Sulfur South, and Amine field operator jobs
