Summary: This position will provide support to other areas of operation by providing accurate and timely test results to aid in the steel production process. Team members will maintain an active role in the safety performance of the Labs and areas of the plant they encounter during their workday. QA&T Team Members will comply with ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Standards and work towards goals to improve upon or exceed those standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares mechanical test samples and provides results from prepared samples; prepares and tests for internal quality on an as needed basis; provides metallographic support to QA; maintains testing of machine; checks calibration of the tester.
  • Provides chemical analysis of steel samples obtained; provides final product chemical analysis.
  • Achieves daily work goals that coincide with our business plan and vision.
  • Assists with trials where required to support our goal of continuous improvement.
  • Operating toward and evaluating against key performance indicators set for the plant, individual departments, and individual work teams.
  • Continuously improving our operation with respect to safety, product quality, operational stability, and operational security.
  • Participates in functional and cross functional continuous improvement teams.
  • Completes reports, checks sheets as required and adheres to operational set-up standards and work procedures.
  • Operates in the proper manner to maintain compliance to ISO/IEC 17025 Lab Standards.
  • Performs weekly preventative maintenance of all Chem and Met lab equipment as scheduled for both day-to-day operation and scheduled maintenance days.
  • Communicates with corresponding maintenance or electrical team members for assistance and reporting of lab issues.
  • Maintains good housekeeping in both Chem and Met Labs to support a safe working lab environment.
  • Maintains all safety standards outlined by North Star BlueScope Steel policies and QA Lab policies.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, GED or higher degree
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • 18+ years of age
  • Ability to interact positively with customers, operators, technical personnel, and management to gain the desired outcomes.
  • General competency of computers with additional skills such as Word, Excel, email monitoring and responses.
  • Ability to recognize unsafe conditions or unsafe acts. Initiate reporting to correct issues and provide a discussion/learning opportunity to all QA Team Members.
  • Ability to multitask during normal operations and unplanned equipment failures.
  • Capability to work alone and takes initiative to complete job tasks without assistance or direction.
  • Basic knowledge and use of hand tools.
  • Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail.
