Description

Job Title: Substitute Teacher

FLSA Status: Per Diem

Reports To: Principal


Primary Purpose: To form students academically, emotionally, and spiritually while instilling a love for others, for God, and for their Catholic faith.

Essential Functions:

  1. Follow lesson plans provided by the regular teacher to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for the students. 
  2. Track attendance. 
  3. Administer quizzes and tests, explain assignments, and collect homework. 
  4. Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation, minimize distractions and maintain a positive learning environment.  
  5. Adapt teaching methods to fit the needs of each individual student. 
  6. Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the halls, on the playground and in the cafeteria. 
  7. Provide in-class and at-home assignments based on the available lesson plan. 
  8. For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the teacher’s regular lesson plans.      

Knowledge, Skills, Experience Required or Preferred:

• A valid and current Substitute Teacher license or authorization

• Bachelor’s degree or higher, preferably in education

• Strong English verbal and written communication skills

• Excellent interpersonal skills

• Ability to lead and instruct students of all ages

• General knowledge of several subjects 

• Ability to adapt plans to specific classrooms

• Flexibility and critical-thinking skills

• Patience

Physical and Cognitive Requirements:

  • Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to handle objects and operate tools, computers, and/or controls; some light lifting may be required

Duties may require travel and attendance at evening and/or weekend meetings. Although work is performed primarily under inside environmental conditions, the required travel may result in temporary exposure to outside environmental conditions. Regular driving and valid driver’s license are required. Duties require a wide range of intellectual and practical problem-solving skills and comprehension of complex concepts.
