Position Overview:

Solid Power is seeking a Process Engineer II to join our talented team of engineers and scientists working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next‐generation, all solid‐state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a public company with a dynamic, fast‐paced, and highly collaborative environment where innovation thrives. This role will play a key part in owning, troubleshooting, and improving the electrode slurry process within our battery cell pilot line. The preferred candidate will have process or manufacturing engineering experience, strong troubleshooting instincts, and a drive to make hands-on improvements alongside operators.

Electrode slurry is the first step in the cell manufacturing process, and it sets the foundation for everything that follows. Changes and deviations here carry downstream into the cell manufacturing process, and the data we collect from finished cells makes it one of the most demanding and consequential processes we run. As the dedicated owner of this process, you will operate, troubleshoot, and improve the equipment and protocols that produce anode, cathode, and separator slurries, working day to day with operators, supervisors and fellow process engineers. Comfort working in gloveboxes and a dry room is part of the role.

Job Duties:

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for electrode slurry processing, including operation, testing, and troubleshooting.
  • Own the slurry process equipment, including the mixing and material characterization tools, and become the expert on their operation, maintenance, and improvement.
  • Develop and improve closed processing methods for powder handling and slurry transfer.
  • Explore and establish new mixing and processing protocols for anode, cathode, and separator slurries.
  • Scope, justify, purchase, and implement new equipment to advance the process.
  • Incorporate operator input to drive practical, lasting improvements.
  • Train operators on new processes to a proficient level.
  • Document processes, including work instructions and standard operating procedures.
  • Analyze production data to identify process drift, efficiency opportunities, and quality drivers.
  • Track and close out corrective actions, working with your peer group to confirm they are completed on time and effective.
  • Apply Lean Six Sigma tools to implement changes in a cross-functional way.
  • Identify or design hardware to support in-process inspection.
  • Work in a dry room and glovebox environment for extended periods.
  • Flex coverage to support off-shift tasks as required.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering experience in a manufacturing or pilot-scale processing environment.
  • Experience with battery cell manufacturing, solid-state or lithium-ion preferred.
  • Experience owning a process or unit operation, or a track record of independent process work.
  • Familiarity with slurry formulation, rheology, particle size analysis, or mixing.
  • Experience with process data analysis and statistical analysis.
  • Experience with SolidWorks, Minitab or JMP.

Physical Requirements:

  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as necessary including, but not limited to eye protection, hair net, gloves, face mask, coveralls, full-face respirator or PAPR
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk.
  • Prolonged periods on the production floor.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. daily.
