About the Role
The Senior Electrical Engineer reports to the VP of Engineering and is primarily responsible for electrical engineering efforts related to a portfolio of data center projects. These projects may include new construction, phased expansions, retrofits and upgrades, acquisition conversions, MEFP (Mechanical, Electrical, Fire Protection, Plumbing) equipment standards, and the development of design standards, processes, and procedures.
This role supports long-term business strategies aligned with key stakeholders and helps drive relationships and outcomes with design partners and equipment suppliers.
This position reports directly to the VP of Engineering.
What You’ll Do
Design and Construction Support:
- Perform engineering tasks, primarily electrical, to support master planning and concept designs as part of investment planning, review, and approval processes
- Review Requests for Proposals (RFPs) for design services
- Review and perform bid leveling and scope verification for design service proposals
- Work toward becoming an electrical engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME)
- Review consultants' engineering calculations and perform independent engineering and cost analysis as assigned
- Support design and construction teams by providing detailed owner reviews of deliverables, including early design packages, drawings, specifications, equipment submittals, Requests for Information (RFIs), and coordination efforts
- Evaluate and provide input on proposed deviations from standards or requirements
- Research new designs, materials, and construction methods related to data center electrical, telecom, and low voltage systems
- Conduct value engineering analyses and provide system recommendations based on ROI and payback
- Review Integrated Automation System (IAS) points lists and sequences of operation
- Includes BAS/BMS (HVAC controls), EPMS (Electrical controls), and DCIM (Customer portal)
- Utilize engineering analysis tools (or review work from others) along with engineering judgment to analyze:
- Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) calculations
- Normal and failure mode load and electrical block sizing calculations
- Electrical coordination and Arc Flash studies (e.g., SKM PTW)
- Power distribution analysis and underground heat calculations (e.g., ETAP)
- Lighting calculations (e.g., AGI32)
Customer Interface and Facility Support:
- Attend design and construction meetings with stakeholders, consultants, and construction partners
- Participate in Factory Witness Testing (FWT) of critical equipment as assigned
- Join technical meetings with customers as needed
- Support on-site commissioning (Cx) activities for Level 4 and Level 5 efforts
- Troubleshoot electrical system challenges and issues
- Respond to emergencies as needed
Innovation and Collaboration:
- Support innovation initiatives alongside leadership, including evaluating new products and services
- Collaborate with Operations teams to ensure alignment on design standards and best practices
- Review and validate Methods of Procedure (MOP) with Operations teams
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) from an accredited institution; Professional Engineer (P.E.) license highly preferred
- 5+ years of experience in mission-critical and/or data center electrical design and construction
- Proficiency in Bluebeam (or similar), Microsoft Teams, Excel, and Word preferred
- Familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and Navisworks, and power modeling tools such as SKM PTW and ETAP preferred
- Understanding of construction codes, especially the International Building Code (IBC) and National Electrical Code (NEC)
- Knowledge of data center industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE TC9.9, BICSI Data Center Standards) preferred
