Job DetailsJob Location: Lakewood, CO 80228Salary Range: $85,000.00 - $95,000.00 Salary/yearPosition Summary: The Senior Project Accountant provides advanced financial oversight and strategic support for project performance and profitability. This role is responsible for managing the financial health of complex or high-value projects while serving as a key advisor to project managers and leadership on financial risks, forecasting, and project performance trends. This is a senior-level, supervisory position within the project accounting function. The role provides guidance and mentorship to project accountants, supports process improvements, and helps maintain consistency in financial practices across projects. Success in this position requires strong analytical capability, the ability to interpret complex contracts and financial data, and the judgment to escalate issues appropriately while recommending practical solutions that support effective project financial management.   Position Responsibilities: Lead financial oversight for complex, high-value, or high-risk projects, ensuring accurate revenue recognition, cost allocation, and profitability tracking. Analyze project financial performance and provide strategic insights and recommendations to project managers and leadership to improve financial outcomes. Own the development, review, and ongoing maintenance of project forecasts and Estimates at Completion (EAC) for assigned projects. Identify financial risks, cost overruns, scope changes, or profitability concerns early and escalate issues to project managers and senior leadership when appropriate. Review project financial data prepared by project accountants to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to company standards. Develop and maintain financial dashboards, reports, and metrics that provide leadership with visibility into project portfolio performance. Lead financial reviews for complex or problem projects and participate in project review meetings to communicate financial status and recommended actions. Partner with project managers to establish project budgets, evaluate financial impacts of contract modifications, and recommend corrective actions when project performance deviates from plan. Interpret and review complex contracts, compensation structures, change orders, purchase orders, and subcontract agreements to ensure proper financial treatment. Review and oversee client billing for accuracy and compliance with contract terms, ensuring timely invoicing and proper revenue recognition. Support project teams in resolving billing issues, client financial inquiries, and project financial discrepancies. Establish and maintain strong internal controls and quality assurance standards for project financial data within NetSuite. Monitor key indicators for project financial health across multiple projects and communicate trends, risks, and opportunities to leadership. Oversee subcontract management activities including review of subconsultant invoices, monitoring subcontract budgets, and coordinating with accounts payable on payments. Mentor and provide guidance to project accountants, supporting their development in project financial management, contract interpretation, and financial analysis. Support the development and refinement of project accounting policies, procedures, and best practices to improve efficiency and financial accuracy. Identify opportunities to improve reporting tools, dashboards, and financial processes that enhance project financial visibility and decision-making. Serve as a subject matter resource for project financial management within the organization. QualificationsExperience/Education/Licensing & Certification Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related field (or demonstrated equivalent experience). 7–10 years of experience in project accounting or related financial roles, preferably within a project-based or professional services environment. Experience working with complex project financial structures, contracts, and forecasting models. Experience with VantagePoint or similar ERP/accounting systems preferred. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, formulas, VLOOKUP, data analysis tools, and financial modeling. Strong analytical, forecasting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate financial data into actionable insights. Exceptional attention to detail, organization, and financial accuracy. Effective communication skills with the ability to clearly present financial information to project managers and leadership. Demonstrated ability to mentor and support the development of other team members. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines in a dynamic project environment.   Physical Requirements: Ability to travel for training and work-related meetings.
