Your Opportunity
At Stantec, our geotechnical engineers play a meaningful role in supporting the responsible development of critical resources while advancing safe, sustainable, and well‑governed engineering solutions. We are seeking a Civil or Geotechnical Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) to join our U.S. Energy and Resources Geotechnical Team and begin building a strong foundation in geotechnical and mining engineering practice.
In this role, you will support dynamic and technically challenging projects in the U.S. and internationally, with a primary focus on tailings storage facilities, heap leach facilities, and waste rock management systems. You will gain hands‑on experience across the full project lifecycle, from early‑stage investigations and design through construction support, operations, closure, and reclamation. Beyond mining, you will also have opportunities to contribute to projects involving water dams, pumped storage, and hydropower facilities, providing exposure to a broad range of geotechnical applications.
You will join a highly collaborative national team of approximately 100 geotechnical and geological professionals, working alongside experienced engineers, subject matter experts, and industry leaders. As an Engineer‑in‑Training, you will develop practical skills through participation in field investigations, construction oversight, and monitoring programs; perform geotechnical calculations and numerical analyses; and support the preparation of engineering designs and technical deliverables.
This role offers a structured and supportive entry point into the geotechnical profession. You will receive mentorship from senior and intermediate engineers, gain exposure to best‑practice project governance and dam safety stewardship, and progressively take on more complex technical tasks as your experience grows. Opportunities to learn from client interactions, internal technical reviews, and multidisciplinary project teams will help prepare you for long‑term professional growth.
Stantec is committed to investing in the development of early‑career engineers. This position provides a strong foundation for professional licensure, technical specialization, and future leadership opportunities within the organization. We are looking for curious, motivated, and adaptable individuals who enjoy solving complex engineering problems and are eager to learn within a supportive team environment. Domestic and international travel will be required for site‑based support and field activities for up to approximately 50% of the year.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and execution of geotechnical field and laboratory programs, including participation in field investigations such as drilling, cone penetration testing (CPT), and geophysical surveys, under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Assist with the development of geotechnical material characterizations for use in design and analysis, incorporating laboratory testing results and field data.
- Perform engineering calculations and numerical analyses using industry‑standard software such as GeoStudio and Rocscience to support civil and geotechnical design and characterization of site conditions.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical design deliverables, including engineering reports, technical memoranda, construction specifications, and design drawings.
- Support proposal development activities, including assistance with project scheduling, scope definition, and preliminary cost estimating.
- Prepare and deliver technical presentations, both internally to project leadership teams and, as appropriate, in support of client meetings and reviews.
- Promote and adhere to safe work practices, following company, client, and regulatory guidelines when planning and executing work in both office and field environments; participation in MSHA and/or OSHA training will be required.Â
