Job Title: Veterinary Technician (Full-Time)

  Veterinary Hospital Reports to: Lead Veterinary Technician

 

Position Summary

The Veterinary Technician plays a key leadership role in our on-site veterinary hospital. This position is responsible for providing hands-on care for working canines, contract canines, and supporting the veterinarian and Lead Veterinary Technician in all clinical duties. The role requires strong clinical skills, leadership ability, and comfort handling high-drive, large-breed working dogs.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as a core team member in the care of all K2K9 working canines and contracted canines.
  • Collaborate daily with veterinarians, vet techs, kennel staff, and program managers.
  • Assist Veterinarian in procedures and surgeries.
  • Independently perform veterinary procedures such as:
    • Blood draws
    • Tests
    • Radiology
    • Fecal analysis
    • Ear and skin cytology
    • Urinalysis

 

Other tasks as directed/needed

  • Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and order in all veterinary areas including hospital yard, exam rooms, laboratory, surgical room and radiology.
  • Handle a variety of large-breed dogs (e.g., Labs, German Shepherds, Malinois), including those with aggressive or reactive behavior.
  • Coordinate canine physical therapy and conditioning programs in collaboration with the Lead Veterinary Technician.
  • Operate and maintain all in-house diagnostic and lab equipment.
  • Participate in training sessions as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Veterinary Technician, Hospital Director and Hospital Administrative Assistant for efficient clinic operations.
  • Manage veterinary care reporting for both M-Dog (K2K9 Working Dogs) and Contract dogs.
  • Share responsibility for year-round on-call duties (50%).
  • Maintain an active Veterinary Technician Certification.
  • Maintain veterinary records
  • Direct report to the Lead Veterinary Technician​​​​​​​​​

Qualifications


Required Qualifications

  • Certified Veterinary Technician (graduate of accredited program)
  • Must be licensed or able to obtain licensure in North Carolina promptly.
  • Strong clinical skills and attention to detail.
  • Professional demeanor and calm presence under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently with strong initiative.
  • Proficient in basic computer tasks, including Microsoft Excel; willingness to learn in-house medical records system.
  • Must be adaptable, dependable, and willing to handle non-traditional veterinary hospital tasks.
  • Comfortable working two Saturdays per month as part of regular clinic hours.
  • Passion for canine care, especially in working dog environments.

 

Preferred Attributes

  • Prior experience with working or military/police canines.
  • Experience in a small team or clinical operations.
  • Familiarity with mobile veterinary operations and fieldwork.
