POSITION PURPOSEĀ
TheĀ dedicatedĀ Charge NurseĀ isĀ aĀ registered nurse responsibleĀ for providingĀ shift-to-shift leadership for the practice and delivery of safe, effective, efficient, ethical, and culturally competent care to theĀ unitĀ patient population.Ā This pivotal role bridges direct patient care with administrative responsibilities, ensuringĀ optimalĀ patient outcomes through effective leadership, resource allocation, and collaboration with the interdisciplinary healthcare team.Ā The Charge Nurse ensures adherence toĀ establishedĀ policies, promotes a collaborative work environment, and supports staff development whileĀ maintainingĀ patient safety and satisfaction.Ā

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSĀ
Ā
Develops andĀ maintainsĀ departmental daily staffing plan detailingĀ appropriate employeeĀ classifications and qualifications consistent with the department's operational plan, projected volumes, patient/acuityĀ and other relevant indicators. Assures compliance with staffing plan.Ā Ā
Oversees daily operations, staff management, and coordination of interdepartmental activities within the unit or department during the assigned shift.Ā
Responsible for resolving clinical issues, and serving as a liaison between nurses, physicians, and administrative teams.Ā
Provides orientation/education for staff and students to ensure assigned patients haveĀ a positive care experience.Ā
LeadsĀ staff in the delivery of safe and effective patient care.Ā Ā
Delivers nursing care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care in collaboration with the physician.Ā
Provides input on staff interviewing and hiring decisions as delegated by theĀ unit leader.Ā Ā
Maintains knowledge of documentation requirements needed for patient records.Ā Ā
Ensures compliance with all policies and procedures governing assigned services, including Joint Commission standards, safety protocols, andĀ applicableĀ federal, state, and regulatory requirements.Ā
Serves as a resource, mentor, and role model in delivering patient care using a team approach.Ā
Facilitates communication between patient/family,Ā physiciansĀ and other caregivers to achieve consensus for the plan of care.Ā ConsultsĀ with the Ethics Committee asĀ appropriate.Ā
Leads and promotes evidence-based practice and research among unit leaders and staff.Ā
Leads quality improvement activities including performance improvement processes toĀ facilitateĀ clinical practice changes.Ā Ā
Conduct follow-up on incident reports as directed by theĀ Unit leaderĀ andĀ participateĀ in ongoing audits of nursing-sensitive indicators to ensure regulatory compliance. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, chart reviews, patient safety audits, shift-based crash cart checks, and other quality assuranceĀ activities asĀ identified by the facility.Ā
Functions independently with minimal supervision from Nursing Leadership, guided by the Nurse Practice Act, MercyOne Central IA Market and Trinity Health policies,Ā establishedĀ nursing standards, and sound professional judgment.Ā
Plans unit and nursing resourceĀ utilizationĀ based on established admission,Ā dischargeĀ and transfer criteria,Ā initiatingĀ appropriate interventionĀ and collaboration toĀ optimizeĀ patient care and unit/department operations.Ā Ā
Serves as a group leader and fulfills an assistant supervisory or lead role, providing guidance and support to team members. Additionally, it contributes to Human Resources functions by offering input and recommendations on personnel matters.Ā
IdentifiesĀ and communicates staff needs to theĀ unit leader.Ā
Serves as a resource or āSuper Userā for documentation in the electronic medical record.Ā
Leads orĀ participatesĀ in interdisciplinary patient rounds and care conferences, management rounding to patients and staff, and Rounding to Influence (Safety First).Ā
Reviews and codes asĀ indicatedĀ for shift needs in timekeeping system.Ā
Collaborate withĀ Unit leaderĀ to balance schedule after closure of self-schedulingĀ time-periodĀ and prior to completion of schedule.Ā
Leads or delegates daily huddles andĀ maintainsĀ huddle boards in collaboration and direction fromĀ Unit leader.Ā Ā
AssistsĀ nursing and interdisciplinary team in patient/family education and discharge planning.Ā

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSĀ
Ā
Possession of a current or compact state license as a Registered Nurse issued/defined by the State of Iowa.Ā Ā Ā
Bachelorās degree in nursing preferred.Ā Ā
12 months of RN experience required.Ā Ā 24 monthsĀ preferred.Ā
Proof of completion of Mandatory Reporter ā Child and/or Dependent Adult Abuse training within three (3) months of hire.Ā
Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider certified or obtained within three (3) months of hire.Ā Ā Acceptable credentialing bodies and certifications include American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.Ā
Unit specific credentialing and education active and in good standing.Ā
