Job Summary:

The Physician Assistant provides health care services to patients; participates in the management of patients’ care, and determines the need for consultation to ensure the continuity and quality of care.

Job Description:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and record complete medical history of patients

  • Perform physical examinations of patients and document results

  • Order, evaluate and monitor medical and laboratory diagnostic tests and treatment plans including laboratory tests, x-rays, pharmaceuticals, blood products and interdisciplinary consults in collaboration with attending physicians or designee and according to established guidelines

  • Prepare, develop and initiate treatment plans in consultation with attending physicians; develop inpatient and outpatient care and write medication and other orders as prescribed

  • Perform routine invasive procedures

  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures

  • Educate and counsel patient and family members on conditions, desired results of treatment plans, expectations during illness and recovery and other related areas

  • Conduct patient rounds and document assessment, diagnoses and treatment plans in progress notes

  • Perform a variety of patient care activities in assigned outpatient clinic (e.g., surgical procedures, pre- and post- operative care, etc.)

  • Prepare discharge summaries as assigned

  • Respond to emergencies and initiate appropriate treatment until relieved of duties by a physician

  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with people inside and outside the department and/or practice

  • Participate in clinical and experimental research, including statistical analyses of data

  • Other duties as may be assigned

Education, Licensure/Certification, and Training:

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree from an accredited program for Physician Assistants, including a 6-month to 12- month clinical internship required

  • Current Michigan Physician Assistant License

  • Current Michigan Controlled Substance License

  • Certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants

  • 1-3 years experience preferred

Skills and Abilities:

  • Patient management skills necessary to provide quality care

  • Ability to operate accurately a variety of medical equipment

  • Ability to monitor data, develop treatment plans and prescribe medications

  • Good written and verbal communication skills to convey and receive information effectively (face-to-face, telephone and electronic)

  • Good analytical and judgment skills

  • Ability to use computer software programs and systems

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding patients, personnel and/or financial data

  • Excellent organizational skills to work independently, prioritize, handle multiple tasks and manage time

Safety Requirements:

  • Compliance with Department Health and Safety policies and procedures

Working Conditions/Schedule:

  • 40-hour work week, hours and days to be determined by the business needs of the department. Additional hours may be required
