DESCRIPTIONĀ 

Ā 

This is a working supervisory custodial position.Ā Ā An employee in this class, with technical supervision from the building supervisor, custodial manager or assistant manager and administrative supervision from a building supervisor,Ā is responsible forĀ the cleanliness and maintenance of the assigned facility and grounds.Ā Ā The incumbent provides supervision of assigned custodians.Ā Ā Work is evaluated through observation while work is in progress and by inspection of completed assignments.Ā

Education:Ā

  • Six monthsĀ of experience as a custodian.Ā

  • (1) year experience as a custodian in a school system or building maintenance.Ā

ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIESĀ 

Ā

Ā 

  • Coordinates and directs all aspects of routine building andĀ groundsĀ maintenance including general cleaning, snowĀ removalĀ and lawn mowing.Ā 

  • Performs inspections to ensure building security and cleanliness of the building.Ā 

  • Ensures custodial staffĀ isĀ trained to secure building and equipment.Ā 

  • Cleans buildings by sweeping, dusting, mopping, scrubbing, sealing, washing surfaces, vacuuming, buffing surfaces, etc.Ā 

  • Performs ground maintenance by mowing, watering,Ā sweepingĀ and weeding.Ā 

  • Moves and stores furniture and equipment.Ā 

  • Removes snow and ice.Ā 

  • MustĀ be available for emergency calls.Ā 

  • TheĀ employeeĀ is responsible forĀ the use of safety devices and protective equipmentĀ in order toĀ minimize theĀ frequency and severity of work-related accidents. The employeeĀ is responsible forĀ using safe practices and methods in the operation and supplies related to their job.Ā 

  • The employee is further responsible for correcting any conditions within the building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees, students, or staff assigned to the building and reporting same to theĀ appropriate administrator.Ā 

  • Makes custodian job assignments andĀ ensureĀ the completion of work.Ā 

  • Performs general building maintenance toĀ include:Ā cleaning bathrooms, dusting, washing windows, scrubbing walls, cleaning furniture, filling dispensers, moving furniture, washing chalkboards,Ā assistsĀ in the cafeteria, cleans trays, replace light bulbs and neon tubes, removes gum, pick up trash from floors, clean drinking fountains, and clean trash cans.Ā 

  • Make minor repairs.Ā 

  • Check and clean equipment.Ā 

  • Open and secure building.Ā 

  • Floor maintenance toĀ include:Ā  vacuum, sweep, dry and wet mop, scrub, wax, and buff.Ā 

  • Outdoor maintenance:Ā  pick-up lawn debris, shovel snow, cut grass, clean sidewalks.Ā 

  • Operate cleaning equipment:Ā  vacuumĀ cleaner, scrubber, buffer.Ā 

  • Use buckets, wet and dry mops, brooms.Ā 

  • Operate grass-cutting equipment.Ā

  • Working knowledge of housecleaning methods, practices and materials used in clean maintenance operations.Ā 

  • Working knowledge of equipment,Ā suppliesĀ and practices in housekeeping management.Ā 

  • Procedures and methods used to requisition supplies andĀ maintainĀ supply records and reports.Ā 

  • Working knowledge of building maintenance to include boilersĀ and buildingĀ mechanical systems.Ā 

  • Ability to make minor repairs and assemble furniture and equipment used at an assigned facility.Ā 

  • Knowledge of current negotiated agreement, Integrated Pest Management Program (IPM) booklet and Energy Management Program (EMP0, Automated Service Request Information Systems General (ASRIS).Ā 

  • General knowledge of supervision and leadership principles.Ā 

  • Ability to communicateĀ effectivelyĀ in writing and orally.Ā 

  • Ability to plan and organize work, delegate work to others, be aĀ self-starterĀ and motivate others.Ā 

  • Provide leadership to the custodial staff.Ā 

  • Strong human relations skills with students, administrators, co-workers,Ā parentsĀ and the community.Ā 

  • Ability toĀ operateĀ cleaning and grass cutting machines.Ā 

  • Willingness to attend andĀ participateĀ in training sessions.Ā 

  • Ability to learn and practice acceptable cleaning methods.Ā 

  • Willingness toĀ acquireĀ skills in the operation of cleaning and grass-cutting machines used in the assigned facility.Ā

Physical RequirementsĀ 

  • Requires extensive walking, stooping, pushing, carrying, climbing,Ā bendingĀ and lifting.Ā 

  • Ability to pick up and carry 65 pounds.Ā 

  • Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.Ā 

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs.Ā 

  • Ability to hear the normally spoken word at 25 feet.Ā

The person selected for this position must meet all requirements of the physical examination administered by a medical service selected by the Howard County Department of Education.Ā 

Ā 

Working HoursĀ 

  • The duty day for a full-time position is 8.5Ā hours per dayĀ including an unpaidĀ duty-freeĀ thirty-minuteĀ lunch.Ā 

  • This position isĀ designatedĀ as an ā€œemergency employeeā€ under the AFSCME negotiated agreement and may require a response during inclement weather and other emergencies. When work cannot be scheduled during the school year during normal hours, weekend/evening and shift work may beĀ requiredĀ as allowed by the AFSCME negotiated agreement.Ā Ā

EMPLOYMENT INFORMATIONĀ

CompensationĀ 

This is aĀ 12-month per year position in theĀ American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME)Ā employee unit. TheĀ current salary rangeĀ for this position isĀ GradeĀ 5Ā onĀ theĀ CustodialĀ SalaryĀ Scale. Step placement will beĀ in accordance withĀ the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and theĀ AFSCMEĀ Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position isĀ not exemptĀ from overtime.

RetirementĀ 

Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employeeĀ electĀ membership.Ā The annualĀ contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.Ā Ā
