Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurse (RN) – Medical-Surgical to provide high-quality, patient-centered nursing care in a busy inpatient medical-surgical environment.
The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of nursing experience, including relief charge nurse experience, and the ability to care for a diverse medical-surgical patient population.
New graduate candidates will not be considered.
Unit Overview
23 beds on one medical-surgical floor
14 beds on another medical-surgical floor
Ideal nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:5
Nurse-to-patient ratio may increase to 1:6 based on staffing and patient acuity
Patient Care Technicians (PCTs): approximately 1:8
Telemetry monitoring available on the unit
Monitor Technicians (MTs) are scheduled to monitor and interpret strips
RNs are responsible for reviewing and signing off on telemetry strips throughout the shift
Charge Nurse and House Supervisor support available
Common Patient Diagnoses
The RN will care for patients with a variety of medical and acute conditions, including:
NSTEMI
COPD
Pneumonia
Sepsis
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Other complex medical-surgical conditions
Key Responsibilities
Provide safe, competent, and compassionate nursing care to medical-surgical patients.
Perform comprehensive patient assessments and identify changes in condition.
Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans.
Administer medications and treatments according to established standards and physician orders.
Monitor vital signs, laboratory results, telemetry, and other clinical data.
Review and appropriately respond to telemetry information throughout the shift.
Recognize and promptly communicate significant changes in patient condition.
Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, PCTs, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
Provide patient and family education regarding diagnoses, medications, treatments, and discharge planning.
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete clinical documentation.
Prioritize and coordinate care for multiple patients in a fast-paced environment.
Delegate appropriate tasks to PCTs and other team members based on competency and scope of practice.
Promote patient safety, infection prevention, and quality standards.
Participate in quality improvement and evidence-based nursing initiatives.
Support and mentor fellow nurses and other team members.
Serve as a relief charge nurse when assigned and provide appropriate leadership and support to the nursing team.
Leadership Responsibilities
Relief Charge Nurse experience is required.
The RN may be expected to provide relief charge coverage, including:
Supporting daily unit operations.
Assisting with patient assignments.
Supporting staff with clinical and operational concerns.
Communicating with the Charge Nurse and House Supervisor.
Helping coordinate admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Promoting appropriate staffing and patient-care priorities.
Supporting effective communication among the interdisciplinary team.
Required Qualifications
Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state.
Minimum 2 years of professional nursing experience.
Relief Charge Nurse experience required.
Medical-surgical experience required.
Ability to provide safe and effective care to patients with varying levels of acuity.
Strong clinical judgment and critical-thinking skills.
Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
New graduates are not eligible for this position.
Required Certification
BLS certification required.
Clinical Environment
Telemetry monitoring is available.
Monitor Technicians are responsible for monitoring and reading telemetry strips.
RNs review and sign off on strips throughout their shifts.
The highest level of respiratory support currently available on the unit is heated high-flow oxygen.
Routine ventilator management is not part of the unit's current scope.
Drip titration is not routinely required for this position.
Floating
Floating outside of Medical-Surgical may be required only when the RN has the appropriate experience and competency.
Potential areas include:
ICU – for candidates with appropriate ICU experience
Emergency Department – for candidates with appropriate ED experience
Behavioral Health – for candidates with appropriate experience
RNs without the required experience will not be required to float outside the Medical-Surgical department.
Schedule & Staffing
Day Shift: 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Night Shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Typically every other weekend.
Typically every other holiday.
No regular on-call requirement.
Low-census staffing adjustments may occasionally occur but are rare.
Scheduling requirements may vary according to patient volume and operational needs.
Orientation
Department-specific orientation includes:
One dedicated orientation shift.
Orientation materials and a detailed department-specific binder are provided.
Dress Code
Any professional scrub color is acceptable.
Closed-toe shoes required.
Appropriate hygiene and professional appearance required.
Compensation & Benefits Highlights
$37.75–$54.63 per hour
$4.00/hour night shift differential
$3.25/hour weekend differential
$20,000 sign-on bonus with a 2-year commitment
