JOB SUMMARY 

The Laborer I assists the Laborer II and III in the general maintenance and cleaning in an assigned city department or area. Duties include assisting in the routine and regular cleaning sanitizing, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming of floors and making minor equipment and facility repairs. Public Services department laborers are responsible for the maintenance of City roads, streets, and other areas of designated right of way. 


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 

Downtown Services: 

• Performs routine janitorial and custodial duties primarily at City Hall, the Community Development Annex, Welcome Center, Courthouse Square, Cedar Mountain, and other City facilities, with occasional support at the Conference Center as operational needs require. 

• Performs cleaning duties including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, wiping tables and surfaces, cleaning interior windows, mirrors, and restrooms, emptying trash and recycling, and restocking paper towels, toilet paper, soap, and related supplies. 

• Monitors interior and exterior areas to ensure cleanliness, safety, and security. 

• Reports on maintenance, repair, or safety issues to appropriate staff or supervisors. 

• Conducts routine facility inspections, including restroom checks and supply replenishment, to maintain buildings in accordance with established standards. 

• Provides operational support to Laborer II and III staff and supervisors as assigned. 

• Performs other related duties as assigned. 


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS  

High School diploma or equivalent.  


CERTIFICATION, LICENSE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS  

• Requires a Valid Georgia Driver’s License. 

• Police Department: Must maintain security and integrity certification. Pass a certified jail course. 


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES  

• Knowledge of materials commonly used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities as related to assigned areas. 

• Knowledge of, or ability to learn, standard cleaning methods and operation of equipment used in custodial work such as brooms, mops, dust mops, vacuums, scouring devices, and wax applicators. 

• Ability to use simple hand tools. 

• Ability to operate trucks and other maintenance equipment such as mowers, chain saws, hedge trimmers, paint spray gun, hand tools, chalker for ball parks, and hand and power saws. 

• Ability to follow written and/or verbal job assignments and/or crew assignments. 

• Ability to obtain a valid CDL license with proper endorsements as required or necessary. 

• Ability to perform routine, repetitive tasks on a continuous basis. 

• Ability to exert continuous physical effort including frequent bending, walking, manipulating and heavy lifting of equipment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The work requires heavy physical effort and involves lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling materials and equipment; climbing, crawling, crouching, bending, and reaching; grasping, handling, and feeling objects; hearing and speaking; and sustained standing and walking for extended periods of time. The employee frequently lifts light to moderately heavy objects and regularly uses hand tools, power tools, and equipment requiring coordination, strength, and manual dexterity. 


WORK ENVIRONMENT  

The work is typically performed in outdoor and indoor settings, including streets, rights-of-way, public facilities, and City-owned properties. The employee may be exposed to varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, traffic, noise, dust, and moving equipment. While the environment is generally safe and stable, the work requires adherence to established safety practices and responsiveness to changing work conditions, priorities, and operational needs.
