Location: This position will be on-site full-time in Dover, NH. The position holder will need to be within commuting distance (within 45 min).

Design Engineer Summary:

This Design Engineer role focuses on the end-to-end design, prototyping, and validation of new products and automated manufacturing processes. You will independently manage development projects while using Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to optimize the performance, cost, and safety of existing products. Develop CMM inspection programs and use precision measurement systems to meet strict quality and functional standards.

Design Engineer Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work together with other Welch Teams and the Customer (as necessary) to conceive, design, and develop new products and processes through engineering analysis, prototyping, risk assessment, and qualification testing from earliest concept to release to production.
  • Manage smaller development projects with minimal direction from more senior engineering staff, considering all technical aspects required to bring given programs to commercial success.
  • Evaluate, document, and implement design or process changes to improve performance, quality, manufacturability, safety, and/or cost of existing products/processes.
  • Design and verification tools, gauges and equipment needed for new products or customer product programs.
  • Manufacture and verification of initial part prototypes.
  • Together with the Project Team and the Manufacturing Engineering Team, support the qualification processes, eventually leading to release to manufacturing.
  • Design and lead experiments to confirm/uncover or resolve design questions.
  • Assemble, test and troubleshoot automated production equipment.
  • Create manufacturing documentation for new products and processes.
  • Implement LEAN and Six Sigma continuous improvement best practices.
  • Inspect tooling, gauges and developmental customer parts for dimensional accuracy. This includes handheld instruments, visions systems and laser scanning CMM.
  • Develop CMM programs based on part geometry, GD&T and functional requirements to inspect and document / record inspection results, programming changes, and quality assurance data.
  • Other miscellaneous tasks may be assigned by the Engineering Manager.
Design Engineer Qualification Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering (or Engineering Technology) field. Mechanical engineering is preferred, but other disciplines will also be considered.
  • At least 1 year of demonstrated engineering experience.
  • Some knowledge of plastic part fabrication techniques (common forming/sealing methods & equipment), thermoforming is particularly valuable.
  • Knowledge of machine design, simple electrical design, and understanding of common manufacturing practices.
  • Six Sigma Green Belt certification or higher preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills; Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. with the ability to learn new ones.
  • Advanced skills in 3D CAD software.
  • Proficient working knowledge of drawing standards (geometric tolerancing, etc.).
  • Knowledge of CMM programming software and interface preferred.
  • Experience with CNC machining and/or manual machining desired but not required.
  • Air and motor vehicle travel (either in the US or internationally) when required (<5% of time).
