The Pharmacy TechnicianĀ assistsĀ in the technical functions of the practice of pharmacy, enabling the pharmacist to provide pharmaceutical care to the patient.Ā

SCOPE OF SERVICE/CUSTOMER:Ā
Reports to the Lead Pharmacist or in their absence, the Retail Pharmacy Supervisor.Ā Ā
Under the supervision of a pharmacist,Ā assistsĀ in the provision of pharmaceutical care to patients ranging in age fromĀ newborns to geriatrics.Ā Ā Ā
Ā
Tasks require a moderate amount of independent judgement, an advanced level of technical knowledge, and a high degree of accuracy.Ā Ā Ā
Ā
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Ā
Greets andĀ assistsĀ patients/customers in person and on the phone in a professional and confidential mannerĀ
Communicates effectively with colleagues and customers alike, being a good listener and adjusting style as neededĀ
RepresentsĀ MercyOne Retail Pharmacies in a courteous, friendly, and caring mannerĀ
Performs duties with flexibility, adapting to changing schedules and needs of the customers, prioritizing workload accordinglyĀ
Operates cash register accurately, including cash, credit card, in store charges and payments on accountĀ
AssistsĀ with all aspects of inventory control: ordering, receiving, stocking, returning, andĀ additionalĀ drug inventory control duties, including checking pharmacy stock shelves for outdated drugs.Ā
Ensures that pharmacists are providing all patient counseling, consultation, and any other activities that involve professional judgmentĀ
Files prescriptions or other paperwork, stocks bottles and vials and performs other clerical duties as necessary or requestedĀ
CollectsĀ accurateĀ patient demographic, allergy and medication data from patients and caregiversĀ
Utilizes pharmacy dispensing software to accurately input patient and third-party information, and process new and refill prescriptions following safety procedures toĀ ensure pharmacist involvement in any process that would involve professional judgment.Ā
Packages and labels prescriptions for final verification of pharmacist in an organized and highlyĀ accurateĀ mannerĀ
Contacts prescribers to obtain prescription refill authorizationĀ
Accepts prescription refill authorizations communicated to the pharmacy by a prescriber or the prescriber's representative.Ā At the discretion of the supervising pharmacist, and after receivingĀ appropriate training, may accept new prescription drug orders or medication orders communicated to the pharmacy by a prescriber or theĀ prescriber'sĀ agent.Ā
Performs drug compounding processes for nonsterile compounding as provided by Iowa Pharmacy Law afterĀ appropriate training.Ā
Contacts 3rdĀ party payers or physician offices asĀ appropriate toĀ resolve third party prescription payment issues (including prior authorization, step therapy, processing questionsĀ etc)Ā
ActivelyĀ participatesĀ in quality, safety, and problem-solving activities with other pharmacy staff and hospital/clinic departments.Ā Ā
Performs other duties and responsibilities as requested by pharmacists,Ā supervisorsĀ or managersĀ
Follows all Federal and State laws regulating the practice of pharmacy, and the duties allowed to pharmacy technicians.Ā
Maintains required department confidentiality and abides by HIPPA regulations.Ā
Takes an active role in enhancing ability to carry out job functions through personal and professional/job-related growth and development andĀ participatesĀ in medical center and/or departmental education programs.Ā
Supports and abides by all medicalĀ center, departmental, and safety policies and procedures.Ā Ā ProactivelyĀ identifiesĀ safety concerns surrounding the work environment.Ā Ā

SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:Ā
Performs math calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, divisions, percentages,Ā fractionsĀ and the metric system accurately.Ā
MustĀ exhibitĀ independent thinking in performing job functions.Ā
Must have above average recall abilitiesĀ in order toĀ perform technical job functions, i.e., remember the generic/trade names of over one thousand medications, remember medications which are price exceptions, etc.Ā
MustĀ possessĀ the ability toĀ effectively and courteously communicate with customers and members of the pharmacy, medical and hospitalĀ staffs.Ā

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Ā

In anĀ 8 hourĀ day,Ā employeeĀ may stand and /or walk 6-8 hours.Ā
Mobility, dexterity, fine motorĀ skillsĀ and ability to use hands in repetitive motion tasks, such as grasping and fineĀ manipulatingĀ isĀ required.Ā
Frequent (21%-50% of worktime) bending, stopping,Ā reaching above shoulder level and pushingĀ and pulling.Ā
Must be able to see at a near visual acuity level.Ā
Must be able to hearĀ speech.Ā
Frequent (21%-50% of worktime) lifting andĀ carrying ofĀ objects weighing 35 lbs. or less.Ā
Occasional (6%-10% of worktime) squatting, climbing 2 feet and balancing.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCEĀ REQUIRED;Ā
Ā
Must be 18 years of age or olderĀ
Registration with Iowa Board of Pharmacy withinĀ 30 daysĀ of employmentĀ
Certification as a Pharmacy Technician within one year of employmentĀ
Typing, clerical andĀ scienceĀ background desirable.Ā
Ā
Note:Ā A minimum of 3 months of āon the jobā training isĀ requiredĀ to perform the job; 12-24 monthsĀ Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā is usuallyĀ requiredĀ to become proficient.Ā
