We have an exciting opportunity for a Sr Flight Mechanics Engineer for Space Launch System (SME) to join our ESSCA contract team at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, AL. 

Job Functions:

  • Analysis of launch vehicle and spacecraft, dynamics, equations of motion, and trajectories to assess performance of spacecraft ascent trajectories, mission analysis, and related studies
  • Modeling ascent and in-space environments, errors, disturbances, GN&C algorithms, sensors, actuators, and mechanisms
  • Simulate and analyze nominal, contingency, and failure scenarios during ascent and in-space flight
  • Develop algorithms and tools to analyze 6 DOF trajectories using Monte Carlo techniques
  • Execute/modify existing software/scripts in C, Python, C++
  • Help develop and improve NASA's MAVERIC simulation

Qualifications

A degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or related field from an ABET accredited institution is required. Typical experience requirements are the equivalent of:

• Ph.D., with minimum of 24 years of experience,
• MS with at least 28 years of experience, or
• BS with at least 30 years of experience

Must be a US Citizen and have a STAR ID

To be successful in this position, the applicant must be detail oriented, work independently and collaboratively, possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, and will typically possess some of the following skills:

  • Dynamically model 6 DOF single body systems
  • Matlab, Fortran, C++ programming experience
  • Familiarity with Linux, Bash, and the use of computational clusters/servers
  • Support the design, integration, and analysis of GN&C products.
  • Configure, conduct, and analyze 6-DOF Monte Carlo simulations.

The candidate is REQUIRED to have the following skills and experiences:

  • C or C++ programming experience, preferably both
  • Python programming experience
  • BASH experience
  • Significant Software & simulation integration OR significant Modeling & simulation experience

Duties

Day to day activities include:

  • Dynamic modeling of 6 DOF single body systems
  • Creating, editing and debugging software written in C, Python, Matlab, Fortran, and C++.
  • Optimization and improvement of analysis tools and GN&C models.
  • Working with GN&C leads and other engineering disciplines.
  • Supporting the verification and validation of technical products.
  • Creation and review of engineering and software documentation.
  • Preparing and Presenting technical reports and briefings.
