Summary/Objective 

The Director of Healthy Living, Sports and Recreation is responsible for the Lake Superior YMCA’s Wellness Center, Youth Sports and Recreation programming; and the experiences for members, guests, and Y employees. The Director oversees personal training, group exercise classes, specialty fitness classes, coordination of Diabetes Prevention Programming, management of health/wellness, youth sports and recreation program staff, and department budget.

Essential Functions 

  • Monitors the Wellness Center as members use the exercise equipment. 
  • Motivates and educates members in leading healthy lifestyles. 
  • Instructs members in strength training principles, training procedures, and exercise techniques. 
  • Teaches members the proper and preferred use of all the strength training equipment. 
  • Ensures maintenance of a neat, clean, and pleasant environment on the Wellness floor. 
  • Hires, trains, and supervises the Lake Superior YMCA’s Wellness Center staff and interns. 
  • Encourages constant growth of all wellness staff. 
  • Understands the prevention, detection, and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries, basic emergency procedures, and the legal and professional responsibilities of personal trainers, group exercise instructors, and wellness coaches. 
  • Ensure safety of members, guests, and equipment in usage of Wellness Center. 
  • Maintain ongoing, current, and diverse group exercise and fitness classes for members and guests to utilize. 
  • Promotes personal training, clinics, events, classes, and all wellness related opportunities. 
  • Creates marketing and communication material for all wellness programs in conjunction with the association’s Marketing staff. 
  • Sets and manages the Sports & Wellness budgets for their respective branch. 
  • Coordinating all Sports & Recreation programming including but not limited to (taekwondo, fencing, youth sports, adult leagues, clinics, Miracle League adaptive baseball, rock wall, Homerun Derby, etc.) 
  • Oversees all league registration, marketing, communication with teams, schedules, equipment needs/set-up, and all other coordination tasks. 
  • Help maintain neat and orderly sports & rec areas in the facility (gym, racquet courts, storage closets, rock wall, etc.). 
  • Maintain online gym schedule remains up to date, manage all gym rentals, and manage all league roster and program participations forms. 
  • Coordinates the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) including staffing, materials, recruitment, registration, and funding. Also oversees other specialty wellness programming.
  • Plans, recruits, and implements regular fundraising events. 
  • Assists in the Annual Campaign each year by educating staff and members on the mission of the Lake Superior YMCA as well as identifying potential donors. 
  • Integrates the mission of the Y and follows the core values of honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility into the healthy living aspect of job responsibilities.

Required Education and Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Health and Wellness, or other related fields of study. 
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience in personal training and/or group exercise instructing. 
  • Nationally accredited Personal Training Certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA, NSCF, ACSM, etc.). 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an individual/class and motivate others to achieve their fitness goals. 
  • Demonstrated ability working with varying age groups and ability levels. 
  • Must have the physical, visual, and auditory ability to perform the essential functions of the job. 
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications required within 60 days of employment. 
  • Minimum of 2 year(s) prior experience supervising staff. 
  • Minimum of 2 year(s) setting and managing a departmental budget.

Preferred Education and Experience 

  • Formal training in specialty class instruction (e.g., Kettlebell, TRX, Yoga, Indoor Cycling, Pilates, etc.)

Work Environment 

This job operates in an exercise area that includes workout machines, weights, treadmills, and other fitness products. The Director will have an office space that includes a desk, chair, computer, and basic office supplies. The Director will have access to other computer and office equipment in the building. 


Physical Demands 

Ability to conduct exercise and fitness classes, demonstrate proper exercises, and perform activities relating to fitness. Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting. Must be able to lift a minimum of 25 pounds. The Director is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. 


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work 

This is a full-time exempt position. The Director will typically work weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. There may be times that hours are extended or shifted based on the needs of members, guests, and the branch.  


Travel 

Travel is primarily local during the business day, with minimal out-of-the-area and/or overnight travel.
