Job Summary: The Safety Specialist is responsible for the daily administration of safety programs within the pipe fabrication facility. This role ensures compliance with OSHA regulations, company policies, and customer requirements while promoting a proactive safety culture. The Safety Specialist conducts inspections, audits, training, accident investigations, and safety observations to minimize workplace hazards and reduce incidents

Key Responsibilities:

Daily Safety Activities

  • Conduct daily safety walks and facility inspections.
  • Observe work practices and identify unsafe conditions or behaviors.
  • Ensure proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Verify compliance with safety procedures for welding, cutting, grinding, rigging, and material handling operations.
  • Monitor housekeeping standards throughout the facility.
  • Investigate and correct safety concerns immediately.

Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

  • Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) and risk assessments.
  • Identify potential hazards involving:
    • Welding and cutting operations
    • Forklift and crane operations
    • Confined spaces
    • Hot work activities
    • Lockout/Tagout procedures
    • Compressed gas handling
    • Material storage and handling
  • Recommend corrective actions and follow up on completion.

Training & Employee Development

  • Conduct new hire safety orientation.
  • Deliver toolbox talks and weekly safety meetings.
  • Train employees on:
    • OSHA requirements
    • PPE usage
    • Fall protection
    • Forklift safety
    • Crane and rigging safety
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • Hazard communication
    • Emergency response procedures
  • Maintain training records and certifications.

Incident Investigation

  • Investigate workplace injuries, near misses, and property damage incidents.
  • Complete incident reports promptly.
  • Conduct root cause analysis.
  • Develop corrective and preventive actions.
  • Track incident trends and provide recommendations for improvement.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.
  • Ensure required safety documentation is maintained and current.
  • Monitor safety metrics and reporting requirements.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Participate in emergency response planning.
  • Coordinate fire extinguisher inspections and emergency equipment inspections.
  • Conduct emergency evacuation drills.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain safety records and logs.
  • Track corrective actions and inspection findings.
  • Generate weekly and monthly safety reports.
  • Maintain OSHA injury and illness records as required.
  • Document safety observations and employee coaching activities.

 

Required Qualifications:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • 3+ years of safety experience in fabrication, manufacturing, industrial construction, or pipe fabrication environments preferred.
  • Experience working around:
    • Structural steel fabrication
    • Pipe fabrication
    • Welding operations
    • Industrial equipment
    • Material handling systems

Certifications (Preferred)

  • OSHA 30-Hour General Industry
  • First Aid/CPR/AED
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
  • Certified Occupational Safety Specialist (COS)

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of OSHA General Industry standards.
  • Understanding of welding and fabrication hazards.
  • Knowledge of crane, rigging, and forklift safety requirements.
  • Ability to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Excellent communication and training skills.
  • Strong investigation and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to influence employees and supervisors to maintain a safe work environment.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk the production floor for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders and access elevated work areas.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to work in manufacturing environments with exposure to noise, heat, dust, welding fumes, and moving equipment.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, including hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toe boots, and fall protection equipment when necessary.
