Job Summary

APTIM is seeking an experienced Radiological Control Supervisor to support Department of Energy (DOE) decontamination, decommissioning, and remediation (DD&R) radiological field operations at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) – Bettis Laboratory Site in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. Project scope includes the demolition of two former research reactor facilities, Buildings CX and CY, as well as the Material Evaluation Laboratory, requiring disciplined radiological control in complex legacy environments.

APTIM is seeking an experienced Radiological Control Supervisor to provide leadership and oversight of radiological control operations in support of Department of Energy (DOE) Decontamination, Decommissioning, and Remediation (DD&R) projects at Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) – Bettis Laboratory Site in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. The Radiological Control Supervisor is responsible for directing daily radiological field activities, supervising RCT staff, and ensuring radiological controls are effectively implemented to protect workers, the public, and the environment during complex DD&R operations.

Reporting to the Project Radiation Safety Officer, the Radiological Control Supervisor oversees radiological work planning and execution; assigns and prioritizes field coverage; reviews and approves radiological surveys and documentation; and ensures compliance with 10 CFR 835, site Radiation Protection Program, Radiological Work Permits (RWPs), and APTIM and project‑specific requirements. The position interfaces closely with project management, work planning, operations, and subcontractor personnel to support safe, compliant, and efficient execution of high‑hazard radiological activities.

The RCT Supervisor is accountable for maintaining a strong radiological safety culture; mentoring and developing RCT staff; supporting personnel qualifications and training; and ensuring radiation detection and measurement instrumentation, survey practices, and data quality meet regulatory and contractual standards. This role requires demonstrated leadership, sound technical judgment, and extensive DD&R experience in active and legacy radiological environments. All work must be performed to the highest standards of technical excellence, procedural compliance, and data integrity, consistent with APTIM policies, client expectations, and DOE requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to receive direction from the Project Radiation Safety Officer and implement, manage, and maintain a comprehensive radiation protection program in compliance with 10 CFR 835, DOE G 441.1‑1C, and all applicable corporate and project‑specific requirements.
  • Provide oversight of Radiological Control Technicians (RCTs) and Radiological Workers to ensure field activities are executed in accordance with project requirements, objectives, and approved work schedules.
  • Support management of all radiological control program elements, including personnel qualifications and training, work coverage, radiation detection and measurement instrumentation, radiological surveys, and radiological sampling activities.
  • Serve as Acting Project Radiation Safety Officer (PRSO) in the absence of the PRSO, as required.
  • Actively support the development, review, and field implementation of site‑specific radiological documentation, including work plans, radiological work permits (RWPs), and job‑specific radiological instructions.
  • Provide direct, on‑site instruction, guidance, and troubleshooting support to craft, RCTs, and other personnel regarding radiological hazards, work controls, and safe work practices.
  • Serve as an on‑site health physics and radiation safety subject matter expert (SME), working closely with field supervision, project management, clients, and regulators to resolve radiological issues and support safe, compliant execution of work activities.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Shall have at least a bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences, industrial hygiene, or engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of seven (8) years of operational health physics experience in the radiation safety field. Prior experience supporting DOE decontamination, decommissioning, and remediation (DD&R) activities is strongly preferred.
  • Current HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification with up‑to‑date annual refresher training required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain medical qualification to wear respiratory protection without restriction in support of project requirements.
  • Ability to perform work in modified Level D and Level C personal protective equipment (PPE), including the use of respiratory protection.
  • Ability to work in both office and active construction or field environments, including walking, standing, kneeling, climbing, and lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Willingness and ability to work overtime as required to meet project and operational needs.
  • Proficiency in performing administrative and reporting functions using standard office software applications, including Microsoft® Word and Microsoft® Excel.
  • Position requires the ability to access client and/or federal facilities. Candidates must possess a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another federally accepted form of identification, as required for site access.
