Job Summary
APTIM is seeking an experienced Senior Radiological Control Technician (Senior RCT) to support Department of Energy (DOE) decontamination, decommissioning, and remediation (DD&R) radiological field operations at the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) – Bettis Laboratory Site in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania. Project scope includes the demolition of two former research reactor facilities, Buildings CX and CY, as well as the Material Evaluation Laboratory, requiring disciplined radiological control in complex legacy environments.
Â
The Senior RCT provides advanced radiological control oversight in support of DOE DD&R activities, ensuring the protection of workers, the public, and the environment during high‑hazard radiological operations. Working under limited supervision, the Senior RCT plans, performs, and leads complex radiological surveys; provides day‑to‑day field coverage for demolition and remediation activities; and ensures radiological controls are effectively implemented in accordance with 10 CFR 835, site Radiation Protection Programs, Radiological Work Permits (RWPs), and project‑specific requirements.
Â
Serving as a senior technical resource, the position supports hazard identification, work planning, and field execution; interfaces with project management and work planning personnel; and mentors junior RCTs and Radiological Workers. The Senior RCT applies sound technical judgment, reinforces procedural compliance, and promotes a strong radiological safety culture in demanding DD&R environments.
Â
This role requires extensive DD&R experience, strong decision‑making capability, and the ability to support the safe, compliant, and efficient execution of complex radiological work. All duties must be performed to the highest standards of technical excellence, regulatory compliance, and data integrity, consistent with APTIM policies, project requirements, and stakeholder expectations.
Â
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform assigned radiological control activities under the direction of the Project Radiation Safety Officer, Radiological Control Supervisor, or designee, in accordance with 10 CFR 835, site Radiation Protection Program requirements, and applicable corporate and project‑specific procedures.
- Operate, maintain, and perform source checks and operational checks on radiation detection and measurement instrumentation in support of field activities.
- Conduct routine and job‑specific radiological surveys and sampling, including contamination, radiation, and airborne monitoring, and accurately document results.
- Provide radiological coverage and job monitoring to support Radiological Workers, ensuring work is performed safely and in compliance with Radiological Work Permits (RWPs), technical work documents, and project schedules.
- Assist in the implementation and maintenance of radiological control program elements, including personnel qualifications and training support, radiological work planning, instrumentation control, radiological surveys, and radiological sampling activities.
Basic Qualifications:
- Shall have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of three (3) years of operational health physics experience in the radiation safety field. Prior experience supporting DOE decontamination, decommissioning, and remediation (DD&R) activities is strongly preferred.
- Current HAZWOPER 40‑hour certification with up‑to‑date annual refresher training required.
- Ability to obtain and maintain medical qualification to wear respiratory protection without restriction in support of project requirements.
- Ability to perform work in modified Level D and Level C personal protective equipment (PPE), including the use of respiratory protection.
- Ability to work in both office and active construction or field environments, including walking, standing, kneeling, climbing, and lifting materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime as required to meet project and operational needs.
- Proficiency in performing administrative and reporting functions using standard office software applications, including Microsoft® Word and Microsoft® Excel.
- Position requires the ability to access client and/or federal facilities. Candidates must possess a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card, or another federally accepted form of identification, as required for site access.
